On Wednesday evening, Chelsea suffered their first loss of the Liam Rosenior era, falling 3-2 at home to London rivals Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, leaving an uphill task for the second leg in early February.
Although the performance was good and much improved, it did nothing to ease the anticipation within the Chelsea fanbase for new additions in this window. Still, for incomings to happen, the likelihood is that outgoings will have to occur first.
Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Buonanotte’s loan from Brighton to Chelsea will be terminated, and he will join Leeds United on loan until the end of the 25/26 season. This move gives him a better chance to play regularly.
Truth be told, it was a very random signing in the first place. Not a terrible player by any means, but someone who struggled to get a look in at Brighton, who had spent the previous season on loan at relegated Leicester City.
No one expected the Argentine to get much game time, and that is how things transpired. Despite Cole Palmer missing large chunks of the season through injury, Buonamanotte has played just 517 minutes in all competitions this season.
Of those minutes, 240 came in the Carabao Cup, though he was an unused sub against Arsenal last night. So, it is clear to him that he needs to go somewhere else and play games, and Leeds gives him the opportunity to do so.
It's weird to think that he started a game as recently as the FA Cup win over Charlton Athletic, playing 69 minutes and grabbing an assist for Tosin Adarabioyo for the second goal just after the break. .
The solitary goal of Buonanotte's Chelsea career came in the third round of the Carabao Cup, scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory away to League One outfit Lincoln City. So, despite the level of opposition, it actually proved to be quite an important goal. Without it, Chelsea may not even be contesting in the semi-finals.
You can be sure that nobody associated with the club wishes him any harm and hopes he does well in the future. One of the weirder signings of the Clearlake era, and there is some strong competition in that regard, but none of it is the player's fault whatsoever. He is a talented boy with plenty of potential.
