Chelsea's Cole Palmer Takes Dig at Enzo Maresca cover image

Palmer's impressive hat-trick is overshadowed by his subtle jabs at former manager Enzo Maresca's restrictive tactics, hinting at a newfound freedom.

On Saturday afternoon, Chelsea made it seven wins from nine to begin the Liam Rosenior era, as they beat Wolves 3-1 at Molineux on match day 25 of the Premier League season.

The star of the day was Cole Palmer, who scored a first-half hat-trick to take his tally to the season to seven in the league, and eight across all competitions, in 1075 minutes of action.

As you'd expect, having found the net three times, the 23-year-old had plenty of media duties after the game. In one of his interviews, he seemed to take a swipe at his former boss, Enzo Maresca, when he was asked by the BBC about the current manager, Rosenior

"Life under Liam is amazing; he gives us all confidence. Let us be ourselves, play freely. I'm sure when I'm back in proper fit, you'll see the best of me." Very interesting words from Palmer indeed.

After the Conference League triumph, the Englishman said he was bored with the ball being passed sideways and backwards, and took it upon himself to take the game by the scruff of the neck and win the trophy. Many took that as a jibe at Maresca, too.

During his time at Chelsea, the Italian did gain a reputation for playing robotic, JDP, Pep Guardiola-inspired football. Very rigid, very slow. Positional football with little individual freedom.

Furthermore, when Maresca left the club at the beginning of the year, it was not lost on people that Palmer did not send a message to the manager on social media, unlike other senior players such as Marc Cucurella and Reece James.

Although two of his goals at Molineux were penalties, we are starting to see Chelsea's number 20 back to his best. His sublime assist for Joao Pedro's second goal in the win at Napoli reminded us of how good he can be at his very best.

It's also interesting that those comments mentioned that he isn't a 'proper fit', so we know his physical best is yet to come. It also shows why Rosenior has been careful with his and other players' minutes since he took over the team last month.

There is a quick turnaround to the Leeds United game - only three days. So, it will be interesting to see if he starts another game so quickly. However, with Championship side Hull City in the next game, that could be the one for Palmer to be rested for, particularly being only three days after Leeds. Let's see.
