Coach Rosenior clarifies Reece James' illness, denying any conspiracy while emphasizing a cautious approach to managing his captain's crucial minutes for Chelsea.
Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior strongly dismissed rumors of any "conspiracy" surrounding the continued absence of Reece James with the Blues, while warning that his captain is dealing with an illness.
The full-back has a dire injury history and has been forced to miss Chelsea’s last two matches. Speaking to the media the day before hosting Leeds United on Tuesday night, Rosenior stated: “Reece is fit. He is unwell today. There is no conspiracy; it is the truth. Hopefully, he will be well enough for tomorrow.”
Leeds has proven to be a tough opponent since Daniel Farke’s formation change, beginning a notable improvement in form that started with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea in December, a match James did not play.
As the race for Champions League qualification intensifies, the clamor for the captain’s inclusion is understandable. However, Rosenior is well within his rights to act with caution.
Chelsea has achieved a notable improvement in Reece James’s availability: in 2025, he has missed only two matches, one due to illness, a far cry from the 51 matches he missed in 2024 due to hamstring injuries and surgery. This progress is due to both the player’s effort and a very controlled medical and workload management plan, with personalized training to avoid overload.
However, the sporting management has not always been ideal. Enzo Maresca was criticized for ignoring internal recommendations and overusing him during his final stage, while Liam Rosenior also fell into the temptation of selecting him too frequently, which has again limited his minutes recently.
With a demanding schedule between the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League, Chelsea’s challenge is to manage its captain’s minutes: to resist the temptation of always using him to ensure his long-term availability and to get the maximum benefit in the decisive stretches of the season.
James has managed to establish himself as a fundamental piece in Chelsea’s scheme, accumulating a total of 30 appearances between the Premier League and Champions League this season. In these matches, he has accumulated 2,011 minutes of play, contributing 2 goals and 6 assists, numbers that demonstrate his constant threat in offensive runs. His passing accuracy remains high at 87.9%, while defensively, he has recorded 94 duels won and 27 key interceptions.
