On Saturday evening, Chelsea came back from 2-0 down to defeat fellow London side West Ham United 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.
It was the first time The Blues had overturned a 2-0 deficit at home since all the way back in 1997, nearly 30 years ago. Joao Pedro got one back just before the hour mark, Marc Cucurella equalised with 20 minutes to go, and Enzo Fernandez scored the winner in the second minute of stoppage time.
That was not the full story, however. Indeed not. The aforementioned winner from Fernandez caused emotions to get the better of some players, and the last few minutes of the game were spent with several players fighting.
Making his debut for the visitors, Adama Traore flung compatriot Cucurella to the ground, whilst defender Jean-Clair Todibo was shown a red card, just minutes after he had missed a golden opportunity to win the game for Nuno's side.
Well, as a result of these incidents, it has been confirmed that both Chelsea and West Ham have been charged. Chelsea have been charged with failing to ensure its players did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way. Meanwhile, West Ham have been charged with failing to ensure their players didn't behave in an improper, and/or provocative, and/or violent way at that same time.
Both clubs have until Friday, the 6th of February, to provide their responses. Very interesting indeed.
Well, it does seem like West Ham were the instigators of what happened, so it does feel harsh on Chelsea. That said, their charge includes the term "violent" whilst Chelsea's does not, so perhaps it does make some sense.
Either way, you can tell that emotions had gotten out of hand. Having just blown a 2-0 lead in a London derby, you can understand why the West Ham players let their anger get the better of them.
By equal measure, you can understand why the Chelsea players retaliated to the physical frustrations from their opponents. It got very messy and distracted people from a great come-from-behind victory to continue what was then a winning streak under new manager Liam Rosenior.
It has not yet been confirmed how big the charges are. You would imagine that, with all things taken into conscious consideration, the charge for West Ham will be the bigger one. It does not feel like a biased comment to say as much. But, well, we will have to see what happens.
