Despite Chelsea's disappointing loss to Newcastle on Saturday, one image went viral worldwide, surprising everyone, including Paul Tierney himself.

With less than 100 days gone in 2026, the Premier League delivered one of the most peculiar situations of this year in the minutes before the start of the match that saw Chelsea lose 1-0 to Newcastle at Stamford Bridge in Matchweek 30 of the competition.

The Blues, who had Enzo Fernandez and Alejandro Garnacho in the starting lineup, held their traditional pre-match huddle in the center of the pitch, and an unexpected guest snuck into the middle of the circle: referee Paul Tierney. The official was waiting to give the starting whistle when he was surprised by the players and did not move from his spot — quite the opposite, in images that went viral worldwide.

His face showed discomfort with the situation, and he tried to strike up a conversation with Cole Palmer, who merely raised an eyebrow and tried to focus on captain Reece James' message. "What's this? Well, a curious moment," described ESPN broadcaster German Sosa.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports highlighted the unusual event on its website: "Chelsea team meeting: Strange scenes as Chelsea are seen huddling around referee Paul Tierney before kickoff!"

Those in charge of the broadcast for DAZN detailed the first indications of this pre-match ritual, which is not unusual for the London side, but on this occasion went viral thanks to Tierney: "Chelsea players huddle in the center, they've been doing it in recent matches. It's quite curious what's happening."

In this regard, journalist Aiman Khalid explained the situation in a written piece on the ESPN website and indicated that it is a repeated practice in recent weeks. "This time, Paul Tierney was standing in the center circle and got trapped in the middle of the Chelsea players' huddle while holding the ball.

A quite funny, albeit unprecedented, scene occurred before kickoff as the Chelsea players were forced to talk among themselves in the huddle that had Tierney on the other side," he wrote.

Coach Liam Rosenior referred to this initiative at the beginning of this month, after Chelsea beat Aston Villa 4-1: "No, it wasn't my idea. The idea came from the players, and I really like it because they show unity, camaraderie, and team spirit, and I think that's necessary." "Before talking about tactics or systems, you need a group of players willing to run and fight for each other," he stated.

Chelsea remains in fifth place in the Premier League with 48 points, in qualification position for next season's Europa League and three points from the tickets to the next Champions League. On the other side, Newcastle took the victory with a goal from Anthony Gordon at 18 minutes and rose to ninth place with 42 points.

Both teams had midweek action, as the London side lost 5-2 to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the Parc des Princes and the Magpies drew 1-1 with Barcelona at home in the Champions League round of 16. Both will settle their ties on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
