Russo's brace fuels Arsenal's dominant win, setting up a thrilling London derby clash against Chelsea in the Champions League quarterfinals.
Arsenal secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the Women's Champions League with a professional 3-1 victory over the Belgian team. The result capped a resounding 7-1 aggregate win, ensuring the current champions remain in the fight to defend their European crown. Russo was the protagonist of the night, scoring two goals that secured the Gunners' passage to the next round.
The north London team dominated the match at Meadow Park, with Russo opening the scoring before Mariona Caldentey restored the advantage from the penalty spot. Russo then added her second goal of the night to extinguish any hope of a Belgian comeback, securing the quarterfinal berth against their capital rivals.
"It's very exciting, and it's a team we know very well," Russo told Disney+ when asked about the upcoming draw. "When you play in the Champions League, and you get closer to the final, you face very strong teams. Playing against Chelsea, an English team, something we're probably not so used to in the quarterfinals, will be incredible."
The quarterfinal draw has produced an exciting matchup, as Arsenal prepares to face their Women's Super League rivals, Chelsea. While European competitions usually provide a respite from the familiarity of domestic leagues, this draw guarantees a high-stakes London derby on the continental stage. For Russo and her teammates, this match represents a benchmark for the growth of English football.
Sonia Bompastor's Chelsea will pose a tough test for the Gunners, as both teams are desperate to secure a spot in the semifinals. The history between these two clubs adds an extra touch of drama to the encounter, as they swap their usual league battles for a fight to become the queens of Europe.
"Two great teams face each other for a spot in the semifinals. It's incredible," Russo added.
"We are playing well, we are playing good football, and that generates confidence in everyone," Russo explained when reflecting on the team's current trajectory. The striker noted that the atmosphere both at Meadow Park and at the London Colney training ground has changed, as the squad has found its rhythm at the perfect time.
"Plus, we are winning, we are getting results in different ways, and everyone is contributing in different ways, so I think the atmosphere throughout the whole team in general is very positive," she continued.
