Defender Mamadou Sarr eyes a "great chance" to debut for Chelsea after a strong loan spell, as defensive woes prompt a potential recall.

On Tuesday evening, Chelsea dropped points at home to newly promoted Leeds United, despite having been 2-0 up and generally cruising for large periods of the game.

The defending for the second Leeds goal was so comical that it went viral all across social media. It was pretty embarrassing from all three of Josh Acheampong, Trevoh Chalobah, and Robert Sanchez.

So, despite the late misses from goalscorers Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, the bulk of the blame has - rightly or wrongly - gone on the defending for that goal, and to the personnel involved.

Many have wondered what the point of recalling Mamadou Sarr was if he is not going to come into the team? The Senegalese international was having a great season on loan at Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg, playing every week and playing very well for the most part.

Yet, Chelsea made the decision to recall the youngster from his loan at the end of the winter transfer window, with his final appearance for Strasbourg against European Champions PSG on the 1st of February.

However, Sarr has found himself as an unused sub in the games against Wolves and Leeds. When 3-0 up and cruising away to the former, why not give him some minutes off the bench?

It is particularly interesting given Liam Rosenior had made him his captain at Strasbourg, despite being just 20 years of age, so it is clear he rates him extremely highly.

But, Chelsea have not been good defensively for most of the season. With Levi Colwill injured, a consistent central defensive partnership has been hard to come by, with all of the options pretty inconsistent in their performances.

So, the exclusion of Sarr has been strange. When he has been playing every week this season, and at a high level, a mid-season "settling in" period feels unnecessary. Just give him a chance.

Well, it does look like Rosenior is about to do that. During his 14:30 GMT press conference on Thursday afternoon, the 41-year-old said that the defender has a "great chance" to start the FA Cup fourth round tie away to Hull City on Friday night.

With the game coming as quickly as Friday, plenty of rotation was inevitable, particularly against a Championship opponent, even if a very good one in this scenario.

Let's hope that Rosenior sticks to his word (albeit he did not guarantee anything), and starts Sarr on Friday. Looking at it from a glass-half-full perspective, there is very little for him to gain by saying that and then not starting the centre back in this game.
