A Chelsea legend is urging the club to sign a Tottenham star, looking to take advantage of the team’s deep crisis and its current relegation battle.
Joe Cole believes Van de Ven is the right person to solve Chelsea’s defensive problems. The 24-year-old has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak spell for Tottenham, which finds itself mired in a relegation battle.
Amid growing rumors that the defender is looking to leave north London, Cole believes the Blues should act quickly. The Chelsea legend is convinced that Van de Ven’s physical qualities make him the ideal player for the tactical system currently being employed at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking about the potential signing, Cole was clear about the impact the Dutchman could have on Rosenior’s squad, which is looking to rebuild its defensive solidity ahead of next season.
Under Rosenior’s direction, Chelsea has tried to implement an aggressive defensive strategy, but recent results indicate the current squad is struggling to adapt. The Blues have suffered four straight losses in all competitions, conceding 12 goals in that span. Cole believes Van de Ven’s recovery pace is just what the manager needs for his system to work effectively.
“Micky van de Ven from Tottenham,” Cole said when discussing potential signings, according to The Sun. “I think it looks like he wants to leave, and I think he would be a brilliant signing for Chelsea. They want to play that high line, and you need a defender with pace and, you know, a good one-on-one defender. He’s brilliant.”
This endorsement comes at a time of growing pressure on Rosenior. Although the 41-year-old coach had a promising start at Chelsea, things have turned in recent weeks. The harsh 3-0 loss to Everton on Saturday marked a turning point, as it severely damaged his hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
With a defense starting to show signs of weakness and rivals finding it increasingly easy to exploit spaces behind the back line, the need for a quality signing is becoming urgent. Van de Ven, valued at approximately £35 million, would bring the speed and technical ability that Rosenior’s team seemed to lack during its debacle at Hill Dickinson.
Chelsea could have a clear path to sign the defender after one of his main suitors reportedly lost interest. Barcelona had been heavily linked with a cut-price move for Van de Ven as it searched for a left-footed center back. However, reports from Spain suggest the Catalan giant has shifted its attention to other targets, specifically Van de Ven’s Tottenham teammate Luka Vuskovic.
With Barcelona potentially out of the race, the door has opened for Chelsea to test Tottenham’s resolve. Convincing a direct rival to sell one of its most prized assets is never straightforward, but with Spurs facing the prospect of another difficult season, the incentive of staying in London while playing for a team with European ambitions could prove tempting for the former Wolfsburg player.
