A clinical Chelsea striker's hat-trick ignites debate: is he now elite alongside Europe's top forwards? His open-play goals speak volumes.
Chelsea's search for a decisive striker appears to have come to an end following the masterful performance by the 24-year-old at Villa Park. His hat trick in the 4-1 victory raised his season goal tally to 17 in all competitions, 14 of them in the Premier League.
Most importantly, all of the striker's league goals have come from open play. This statistical purity has placed him on par with the most feared forwards in Europe, providing Chelsea with the specialist No. 9 they have lacked for nearly a decade.
When asked if his striker was on par with the current greats, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappe, Rosenior responded in a press conference: “Joao is now in that category. In the two months I've been here, he has consistently shown he is a world-class striker.
I talk about my players; it would be disrespectful to Erling to compare them. I don't know Erling very well, but from the outside, he seems a magnificent, world-class striker. Right now, I wouldn't swap Joao for anyone: he's showing all the qualities and attributes I want to see.
The best thing about Joao is his age: he can still improve, and I've already spotted several areas where he can progress. But the level he's performing at now is world-class, and it's my job, the club's job, and his job to keep him there.”
The data backs the manager's bold stance. With a shot conversion rate of 24.6%, the Brazilian is currently more effective than Haaland (22.5%) and Mbappe (20.7%). Only Haaland and Kane have scored more non-penalty goals in Europe's major leagues this season.
Although the Chelsea player still lags behind Kane's long-term consistency — the England captain has 92 goals since the start of last season, compared to the Brazilian's 33 — his creativity is allowing him to close the gap. With nine assists this season, he has also become a versatile threat, capable not only of scoring goals but also creating chances for his teammates.
