On Tuesday evening, Chelsea once again failed to get three points, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by a very out-of-form AFC Bournemouth side at Stamford Bridge. Truth be told, the visitors were unlucky not to get more from the game with the amount of clear cut chances they created.
The tone was set for the evening after just four minutes. Much of the noise before the game was Moises Caicedo being on a suspension tightrope - the Ecuadorian was one yellow card away from a ban, with the game against Bournemouth the final outing before the threshold changed.
Some had even suggested he should be on the bench for this one, just in case. Nevertheless, he was named in the starting XI. Then, just four minutes in, he was booked for a foul and was already out for the game against Manchester City this weekend.
So, that is one change that will have to be made. But, as you would expect after more dropped points, it is not the only change that Enzo Maresca should make. Let's look at the necesssary changes needed.
Let's begin with the change for Caicedo. This one feels straightforward enough. With the physicality that the 24-year old provides, it is clear that Andrey Santos is the player that needs to come in. If he doesn't, there will be a clear lack of physicality in the middle of the park. It will be tough even with the Brazilian, never mind without.
This segways into the next change nicely. There is no doubt that Reece James needs to come in. Although the second half last night was not perfect, Chelsea were much more controlled with their captain on the pitch.
Furthermore, he will, as usual, be able to tuck into the midfield and help Santos, offering even more physicality. On and off the ball, he will be needed, and at his best, for Maresca's side to get a result at The Etihad.
It is worth saying, it shouldn't be a straight swap for Josh Acheampong. The young defender should move back into the centre of defence, with Trevoh Chalobah - whom struggled once again - coming out of the side.
Up front, it is clear that Joao Pedro should come into replace Liam Delap. The effort and endeavour from the latter was apparent, but the quality is just not there. He could be useful for a game like City away, with the space on the counter, but Chelsea will need Pedro's technical ability to retain the ball in a game where they are going to have less possession than usual.
Other than that, let's see. If fit, you'd imagine Marc Cucurella will come back in, but it is important that he is fully fit and isn't rushed back. He was not even fit enough for the bench last night, so it could be touch and go.
Possible XI for Man City; Sanchez; James, Acheampong, Fofana, Gusto; Santos, Fernandez; Estevao, Palmer, Garnacho; Pedro. If 100% fit, Cucurella in at left-back. Anything less than that, he shouldn't be risked in the first week of January.
