The Blues eye a top-tier keeper. A modern shot-stopper with ball skills, he's a £50 million target as Chelsea plans for the future.

According to TeamTalk, the Blues are tracking the 23-year-old, who is impressing despite the Seagulls’ struggles. A truly modern goalkeeper, the Dutchman looks comfortable with the ball at his feet and between the posts.

Brighton knows the talent it has and, reportedly, is asking an exorbitant fee of £50 million. Perhaps that is because they know Chelsea, along with Bayern Munich, is strongly rumored to be interested.

For now, we do not believe any rumors about a new starting goalkeeper. The sporting directors have backed Robert Sanchez throughout, even when his form was at its worst.

Now that he is playing at his best level since arriving at Chelsea, they are not going to backtrack. So, at the moment, we are not convinced. However, replacing Filip Jorgensen — who appears likely to leave in the summer in search of more minutes — with a new second-choice goalkeeper with potential does fit much more into the plans.

The future of young talent Mike Penders, currently on loan at sister club Strasbourg, is also a key piece of the puzzle. He still appears to be a year or two away from competing at Stamford Bridge, but spending £50 million on a player only a few years older still does not seem sensible.

Verbruggen has played 25 matches in the current Premier League season, in which he has recorded five clean sheets and 70 saves. Since he arrived in England from Anderlecht in July 2023, the goalkeeper has accumulated 93 total appearances for the Seagulls, also establishing himself as the starter for the Netherlands national team, for which he has 26 international call-ups.

Chelsea’s interest is driven by co-sporting director Paul Winstanley and head of goalkeeping Ben Roberts, who previously worked at Brighton and have closely tracked the player’s progression. Although current Blues starter Robert Sanchez has shown solid form under manager Liam Rosenior, the hierarchy views Verbruggen as a long-term elite option to secure the position.
