Blues enquired about Spurs' exciting young talent last month, but their London rivals rebuffed the advances for the highly-rated midfielder.

As previously discussed, it was a pretty quiet winter transfer window for those at Chelsea, with loan recalls ending up being the main topic of discussion for large periods throughout January.

That does not mean players were not looked at, however. For example, the club explored a deal to bring Douglas Luiz in on loan from Juventus, but he eventually swapped Nottingham Forest for Aston Villa instead.

Well, one more player who was looked at during January was Lucas Bergvall from Tottenham Hotspur. Indeed, according to highly reputable Athletic journalist David Ornstein, Chelsea enquired about the midfielder last month.

He states that Spurs rebuffed approaches from the Blues as well as Villa, with the club having no plans to let him leave, despite a reduced role this season under the manager Thomas Frank.

Since then, Bergvall picked up an untimely injury during a UEFA Champions League game with Borussia Dortmund, meaning he will be out of action until the end of April, missing Sweden’s World Cup play-offs in the process.

As it stands, the recently turned 20-year old has five 1/2 years remaining on his Spurs contract, so any potential deal would have been very pricey, you’d have thought, particularly being a London rival — even with less game time this campaign.

No doubt, he is a very talented player who has shown a lot of promise, particularly under Ange Postecoglou last season. Perhaps this is one that the club will revisit in the future?

That said, Chelsea do have a good core of midfielders at young-ish ages. Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez are still only 24 years old, whilst Andrey Santos and Romeo Lavia are only 21 — albeit the latter is basically never available anyway.

So, the link to Bergvall does feel a bit random, even though he is clearly a very talented player who has been trusted to play significant minutes for both club and country despite being so young. He was wanted by Barcelona when playing in Sweden, but opted to join Spurs instead.

Ah, well, let's wait and see what happens in the future. It is worth noting that Ornstein said Chelsea and Villa are both "long-term admirers" of the players, rather than just suggesting this was newfound interest. This may suggest that the club revisit the situation once again in the future. It's hard to know how Bergvall's future looks at Spurs, given all the upheaval in the dugout. Worth keeping an eye on this one.
