Darwin Nunez already has a top-flight title in England on his resume, after helping Liverpool regain domestic dominance in the 2024/25 season. He moved to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Hilal after scoring 40 goals in 143 games for the Reds.
Consistency was an issue during his time on Merseyside, after signing for £64 million from Benfica, but another change of scenery is being planned after he lost prominence in his Middle East adventure.
Former France international Desailly believes Chelsea should sign the 26-year-old player, who still has plenty of potential, and told FootItalia: "In fact, I would recommend Nunez for Chelsea. He is a very good, intelligent player; he just needs the right environment to perform. When Liverpool identified his potential, they knew what he had statistically.
But when you start on the wrong foot, confidence disappears, and so does the consideration of those around you. It's like when Dennis Bergkamp signed for Inter Milan: everything went wrong. Or Roberto Carlos in his early days, when he would blast the ball into the stands. He had no confidence.
That's what happened to Nunez at Liverpool. But the quality is still there. He's now at Al-Hilal and has scored about six goals in 16 games, which is not bad at all."
"I'm glad to see he wants to return to European football, which shows that money isn't everything. A club like Chelsea or the new Manchester United would be best for him. He needs to be surrounded by established, confident players who know they're going to play every weekend and who will pass him the ball first time.
That's the little detail: when he makes a run, he needs to receive the ball immediately. Otherwise, he loses confidence quickly.
We had something similar with Frank Lampard, a magnificent player, but sometimes he would look for another option instead of passing the ball first time to the striker. You could tell the strikers would lose their rhythm. Nunez needs that ball immediately. But he's a quality player, and he's still fairly young."
