Enzo Maresca's cryptic post-match comments have sparked speculation about his future, with hints of discontent toward the club leadership.

Despite a good win against an in-form Everton side on Saturday afternoon, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca cast doubt on his future at Chelsea after the game.

During his press duties in the aftermath of a much-needed victory, the 45-year-old said it had been a tough couple of days for him and that he didn't feel he had the support he wanted.

Such cryptic quotes have left many fans wondering who he was referring to - the fans, or those higher up at the club. Highly reputable journalist David Ornstein has shed some light on the situation.

"Well, you've seen there he's had the opportunity today [Monday, in his press conference] to elaborate and didn't”.

He did seem to double down on his initial comments.

It has led to the suggestion that he may be unhappy with the sporting leadership at Stamford Bridge. Nobody [at the club] has come out, at this point, to deny it. There was a run of four winless games.

That has been put down to the people I speak to at Chelsea, as bringing a bit of an emotional reaction, perhaps. There would have been regular meetings [about the results] taking place, particularly after Atalanta, of course. Perhaps something was said about those whom he didn't like.

We've seen that Chelsea always reviews its managers at the end of the season, as in the case of Mauricio Pochettino. There will be a review we're told of Maresca at the end of this season, this was always the plan - after two years.

There are no suggestions that his position is in doubt. They always seem to be backing him in the conversations I have, but this certainly raises curiosity, and perhaps some hidden messages we don't yet know the full extent of. All very cryptic."

So, what can we take from these comments? Although you could argue Ornstein doesn't reveal too much, it is interesting that he says there is no suggestion his position is in doubt, which has to be seen as a positive.

Maresca Expresses Discontent

However, he suggests that Maresca may be unhappy with the hierarchy following recent meetings. He doesn't entertain the idea that the Chelsea manager could have been having a dig at the fans, implying it was a dig at those upstairs.

It's a shame there appears to be off-pitch noise again after it seemed to have finally gone quiet on that front, but let's see. Focus turns to the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Cardiff City.

You get the idea that, in his post-game press conference, he will once again be asked about his comments. Nevertheless, hopefully the questions will be about the football, and hopefully it will be about The Blues securing their place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Let's see. It's certainly not an optimal situation for anybody involved. Let's hope it all goes away as quickly as possible.
