With 13 points from the last 15 available, Manchester United are enjoying their richest vein of form in quite a long time. The good times feel like they are coming back under Michael Carrick.
Players are being played in their correct positions, the team are playing well in both boxes, and the results are speaking for themselves, despite a pretty hard recent schedule. Several players are hitting top form.
Including English trio Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Kobbie Mainoo. We have seen Shaw play his longest run of games in years, whilst Maguire is forming an excellent partnership with Lisandro Martinez. Meanwhile, Mainoo has been a revelation since coming straight back into the team under Carrick.
Well, it looks like they could be rewarded for their performances. England manager Thomas Tuchel revealed on Thursday afternoon that all three players are "back in the picture" for the England national team.
It would be perfect timing. Shaw has not played for England since the Euros final in July 2024, whilst Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo's most recent caps both came just one game later, against the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League two months later.
In March, England will play two friendlies, at home to Uruguay and Japan, in their final games on home soil before the World Cup. It will also be the last games before the squad is announced, with stateside friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica to take place with the players that have been picked for the finals.
So, it will be very interesting to see if the United trio will be in the squad for that game. Earlier this week, it was reported that Mainoo was 'very likely' to go to the World Cup, so we will see.
We saw at the Euros just what the 20-year-old is capable of, particularly with his performance against the Netherlands in the semi-final. At the back, Maguire has always been very solid for England, and Shaw had one of the best tournaments of any Three Lions player in recent memory back at the Euros in 2021.
Let's see what happens. It feels like Mainoo certainly has the best chance of all three players. Probably followed by Maguire, and then Shaw, if we are judging based on the depth and quality in their respective positions. Good luck to all of them, though, they certainly deserve it if they continue with their current performance level.
