Locking down Fernandes was the masterstroke. Postecoglou details the tactic that neutralized Manchester United's attack in the Europa League final.

Last May, Manchester United lost their second Europa League final in five years, when they gave Tottenham Hotspur their first trophy since 2008, and their first European silverware since 1984.

Safe to say, it was one of the darkest days in the club's modern history. A completely embarrassing evening for everyone associated with the club.

The ironic thing is that the winning manager, Ange Postecoglou, lost his job, whilst the losing manager, Ruben Amorim, stayed in his post until last month. Crazy when you boil it down to that.

Earlier this week, Ange appeared on Gary Neville's 'Stick to Football' podcast to talk about his career. As was inevitable, the Europa League final came up in conversation.

Speaking about the game, the 60-year-old said: "I knew if we shut down Bruno [Fernandes], they were not going to score. I just felt with United, and the way they set up under Ruben [Amorim], and the ways they'd try and break us down, if we were really solid defensively, as long as we scored, we needed to get a goal [we'd go on to win the game from there]."

Whilst this is nothing mind-blowing or revolutionary, it just goes to show how United had no plan B under Amorim. A lot of the talk before the game was about how if Bruno had an off day, the Spurs could well win the game. If he were on form, it would be very hard for Ange's side to lift the trophy. But ultimately, it was not his best game, and the rest is history.

In fairness, he wasn't too bad, and he did create a big chance for Luke Shaw in stoppage time. However, he certainly wasn't at his brilliant best, and did miss a presentable opportunity with a header around 18 minutes of normal time remaining in the game.

Well, in fairness to Amorim, if only he had an academy graduate at his disposal who had scored a brilliant goal against Lyon in the quarter-finals. Someone who is currently playing very well in every game. Ah, he did... and brought him on in stoppage time. A shambles all round.

There is no longer any trophy up for grabs this season, but if Bruno can continue to perform well in the league, then United should secure a Champions League spot for next season, and will thus have a bigger transfer kitty in order to strengthen the swuad this summer. Let's see.
