LA Galaxy eyes midfield maestro Casemiro for a Designated Player role. Will a move to MLS follow his Old Trafford exit?

Casemiro arrived at Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2022, in an €82 million transfer, and since then has played 148 matches for the Red Devils, scoring 22 goals. At 33 years old, the Brazilian has once again been a key piece this season and possibly the most outstanding player in United's three consecutive victories under the management of Michael Carrick, who took charge of the first team following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim in January.

However, Casemiro has confirmed this will be his final season at Old Trafford, and rumors about his next destination are already generating great excitement.

According to the Daily Mail, the Los Angeles Galaxy is evaluating the possibility of signing Casemiro under MLS's Designated Player rule. Introduced in 2007 with the arrival of David Beckham, this rule allows teams to sign up to three players whose salaries and acquisition costs exceed the league's salary cap.

If finalized, Casemiro could become the third Manchester United icon to join the Galaxy, after Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Beckham won two MLS Cups with the club before his departure in 2012, while Ibrahimovic played at Dignity Health Sports Park for two seasons, between 2018 and 2019.

Manchester United would have considered activating the one-year extension option on Casemiro's contract if not for his £375,000 weekly salary. It remains to be seen if the Los Angeles Galaxy would be willing to meet his salary demands, though this would not be a problem for clubs in Saudi Arabia.

It is reported that Casemiro rejected a transfer to Al-Nassr last summer, which would have allowed him to reunite with Cristiano Ronaldo, though he continues to generate interest in the Saudi Pro League.

For now, Casemiro remains focused on his duties with Manchester United, which occupies fourth place in the Premier League table with 14 matches left to play this season. Carrick's team will return to action on Saturday at home against Tottenham and, three days later, will visit West Ham, which is fighting to avoid relegation, as it continues its battle to secure Champions League qualification.
