Manchester United eyes Newcastle's midfielder. Could this signing ignite their title ambitions and reshape the squad?

Say it quietly, but the good times may just be back at Manchester United. Four league wins in a row for the first time since February of 2024, players playing in their natural positions, Kobbie Mainoo back in the side, United playing devastating counter-attacking football once more.

Such is the current mood around the club; many are suggesting that the Reds are a few signings away from mounting a challenge at the top of the league in the 26/27 season.

Although that does feel somewhat far-fetched at the moment, you never know what a productive summer can do. For example, Arsenal went from fifth place to a title challenge back in 2022, after a productive summer transfer window.

So, it will be interesting to see who United target this summer, and in which positions. As per the Telegraph, Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is a player that they have added to their shortlist.

The Italian was reportedly of interest to Arsenal on transfer deadline day last week, but nothing came of it. Any deal would have been too late for the winter, but that would change in the summer.

From this summer, Tonali will begin to enter the final two years of his contract on Tyneside, assuming he does not extend before then. You'd imagine this will make Newcastle at least want to begin assessing their options before his market value begins to tank.

As for United, it is certainly interesting. Does the club need someone of the Italian's profile? He is a box-to-box midfielder, with lots of energy and the occasional knack of crashing the box to score.

He is not really a defensive midfielder, though he is a solid ball-winner. He is not elite in possession either, with Newcastle in general often criticised for only being able to play in transition, with breaking down a low block considered a huge issue for Eddie Howe's side.

You'd imagine that someone like Elliot Anderson would be a better fit for United, truth be told. There is no doubt that Tonali is a good player; he was a big part of the team that won the Carabao Cup last season, but realistically, he does not feel like the type of player the club needs at this moment in time.

Well, you never know what may happen. Let's wait and see. Perhaps one to keep an eye on this summer.
