Owen outlines the specific player changes and summer strategy needed to return Manchester United to Premier League glory within two years.
Michael Owen has made a bold prediction about a Manchester United title win in "one or two years," and the former Red Devils striker has explained to GOAL how the top-flight crown can be brought back to Old Trafford. That has not happened since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, but there are signs of life under Michael Carrick and promises of more signings in the future.
Several high-profile managers, including Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, have failed to get the Red Devils back on a winning track, and consistency has been a hard target to hit for over a decade.
Ruben Amorim was the latest to be dismissed from English football's most high-profile coaching position, as the Portuguese was relieved of his duties in early 2026. He oversaw United's worst finish of the Premier League era, as the team fell to 15th place in the 2024/25 season.
Carrick has taken over on an interim basis and has secured four consecutive victories. Champions League qualification is back within reach, as United sits just six points from second place in the current table. Cautious optimism is growing again at the so-called "Theatre of Dreams."
Ambitious plans have been drawn up to win another league title in 2028, and Owen believes the Red Devils could be on track to meet that objective. He admits United does not look like a title contender at present, but is heading towards another big summer.
Former United striker Owen, speaking to casino.org, where he is now a U.K. ambassador for the online casino comparison website, responded to GOAL when asked what is needed to reestablish domestic dominance: "Even though they are doing very well, it is not just about what can be added to this team to give them a chance of winning something. We all know Casemiro is leaving. We all think they still need players. There are also doubts about Bruno Fernandes and whether he will stay. It is possible this team, this summer, will still have to go through quite a few changes. It is hard to say.
"As it stands right now, with the current team and the way they are playing, they could finish second or third in the league at the end of the season. If the league started tomorrow, you could not rule them out as genuine title contenders, based on the way they are playing, the way Liverpool is playing, and the way City is playing. Overall, their seasons have been quite poor, and this season, it will take a few points to win the league. You cannot rule it out, the way they are playing right now."
Owen added on the topic of signings, with speculation already building ahead of the next transfer window: "They probably still need one or two players. And if they lose Casemiro and maybe even Fernandes, those are two really important players. It is all about balancing lowering the age, etc. It is incredible.
"I have said it to a lot of people, Manchester United, even when it is down, will turn it around. Once it does, it might take another year, it might take two months, but someone will get it right. It is too big a giant to keep underperforming; when it does turn, it will gain unprecedented momentum. That could happen.
"People think they are so far away, but if they keep doing what they are doing and have a good summer, they might not be that far away, and it might only take one or two years to win the league, instead of five, six, or seven, like some are predicting.
"Right now, it is fascinating. As long as they have the momentum, I would advise them to keep going. Do they want to change the manager and things like that now? Wow, they are asking for trouble after all these years."
United will not decide on Carrick's future until the end of the season, with more experienced names still linked to a permanent post at Old Trafford. However, the Red Devils are riding a wave of confidence at the moment and are drawing up plans for the future that include challenging for the title and building a new, spectacular stadium.
