Despite snubbing Real Madrid for a dream move, the defender faces a stark reality on Manchester United's bench.
Manchester United went 'all in' to 'take' the signing of Leny Yoro from Real Madrid. The former Lille center back, who arrived in the summer of 2024 for a fee of €62 million, landed at Old Trafford looking like one of the most promising defenders on the planet.
His time at the 'Theatre of Dreams,' however, has turned into a nightmare. From the start. The French center back, an under-21 international, missed the first four months of competition last season - he did not debut until 4 December - due to an ankle injury.
He returned, but his performances, unfortunately, were not always accompanied by good results. United, which finished fifteenth, only won two of the 12 Premier League matches Yoro started. They were, to make matters worse, against two relegated teams: Southampton (3-1) and Ipswich (3-2).
Even so, he remained firm in his decision to sign for United. "Not even last season, I never had this feeling of regret. I know Manchester United, I know that sometimes you can go through a bad spell, but this is a top club, so you can't have doubts about this," he acknowledged to 'The Guardian.'
He started this campaign as a starter under Amorim, but the match against Crystal Palace (1-2) sealed his fate. The Red Devils managed to come back after Mateta put the Eagles ahead by converting a penalty committed by Yoro himself. The Frenchman, on the verge of tears, could not hide his desolation, already on the bench, when he was substituted in the 55th minute.
Since Carrick's arrival, he has lost even more prominence. He was a substitute in the victories against Manchester City (2-0) and Arsenal (2-3), and he only played one minute when he came on in the 96' for Mbeumo in the dramatic win over Fulham (3-2). A reality that, with the Maguire-Lisandro Martinez duo performing well, shows no signs of changing in the short term.
In the last three matches, he has watched all 90 minutes from the bench in two, and in the other, he came on the pitch to waste time. He is a backup to Maguire and Lisandro Martinez, and when De Ligt returns from his back problems, he will be the fourth center back. A negative outlook for the French defender, as it greatly complicates his chances of going to the World Cup.
An unexpected situation: as in his first campaign, with some ups and downs, he accumulated much praise. After the semifinals against Athletic Club, everyone was excited about him, but some injuries have diminished his performance.
He had a sealed agreement to be the center back of the future for Real Madrid, but Manchester United's offer made him rethink everything and change his plans. The reason? That United is bigger in his opinion. 'United is the biggest club in the world. For me, it is a dream to play for this club. The Premier League is the best in the world, and the fans are incredible.'
