Manchester United Midfielder's Future Takes U-Turn Under New Coach cover image

Once frozen out and ready to leave Old Trafford, Kobbie Mainoo’s United future looked bleak. Napoli talks were real—but one managerial change flipped everything. A derby start, renewed trust, and a World Cup dream now define his dramatic turnaround.

Kobbie Mainoo is one of the youngest and most talented midfielders in European football. He progressed through the ranks of Manchester United's youth teams and became a fan favorite since his early appearances at Old Trafford.

Mainoo is a 20-year-old midfielder with great physical qualities, very strong in duels, and knows how to deal with the ball on his feet. Despite his young age, Kobbie has collected until now 87 appearances with the Red Devils, with 7 goals and 3 assists. He was considered a valuable option also for the national team.

In the last couple of months, Mainoo hasn’t played a lot due to the difficult relationship he had with the former coach of United, Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach didn’t see the young English midfielder as an option for his starting eleven, and due to this, Kobbie didn’t play and didn’t have chances to contribute to the team and to demonstrate his qualities.

Due to this reason, a lot of rumors circulated about Mainoo last summer and also in this January transfer market about the possibility of his departure from the club. A lot of teams in England, and not only, were interested in signing him on loan or buying him.

The relationship between Kobbie and his former manager, Amorim, was so bad that it made the English midfielder decide to leave the club as soon as possible to have the opportunity to play. His most possible option in this January transfer market to go and play was in Italy at Napoli, and the two clubs had started negotiations about this transfer.

But with the change of coach at Manchester United, things seem to have changed now about the future of the English midfielder. With the new coach, Michael Carrick, Mainoo has started to play more. He was given his first start of the season last week in the Manchester derby. Carrick has declared several times that he appreciates and likes Kobbie a lot as a player and that he is very important in his plans for the team.

With these developments, Kobbie seems to have made a huge turnaround and has decided to stay at United and to contribute to the team and to get more and more minutes in this second part of the season to secure also his place at the England national team for the World Cup in the US this summer.
