See the likely lineup facing Newcastle. Will Carrick's United secure points with this formation and these key players?
St. James' Park will be the setting for one of the most attractive matchups of Matchweek 29 in the Premier League, where Newcastle United hosts Manchester United in a duel with important points at stake for both teams.
Michael Carrick's side arrive strengthened after the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace and remain in the Champions League places with 51 points, while the Magpies, sitting in the lower half of the table with 36 points, need to respond after losing to Everton.
Manchester United's possible lineup (4-2-3-1)
GK: Senne Lammens – Silent reliability. The Belgian responded when called upon in the last match and could do little about the goal conceded. Against a Newcastle side that attacks with crosses and second balls, he will need to show assurance in coming off his line and command his six-yard box.
RB: Diogo Dalot – Floundering flank. Inconsistent in recent buildup play, he needs to regain his precision to avoid compromising the buildout. When he manages to push forward intelligently, he provides width and depth to a team that often funnels play inside.
CB: Harry Maguire – Commanding voice. He recently imposed himself in aerial duels and led during moments of pressure. His reading of the game to anticipate and his physical strength will be key against intense forwards and in set-piece situations.
CB: Leny Yoro – Accelerated learning. The Frenchman showed defensive doubts in the last match, especially on the opposition's goal, but improved as the minutes wore on. Against Newcastle he will face another test of character in physical battles and defensive concentration.
LB: Noussair Mazraoui – Switched profile. Playing on the left, he contributes tactical discipline and tucks inside defensively. He is not natural in that position, but provides balance and can become a third center back in the attacking phase.
CM: Casemiro – Competitive barometer. He organizes, breaks up play and poses a threat in the opposition box from dead-ball situations. He imposes his authority to prevent the opposing midfield from winning second balls and controlling the game's tempo.
CM: Kobbie Mainoo – Harnessed energy. He often opts for safe passes, although when he dares to drive forward he breaks lines with ease. He is expected to have greater influence to support Bruno and leave him isolated higher up the pitch.
CAM: Bruno Fernandes – Absolute brain. The captain was once again decisive with a goal and an assist in the match against Palace. He is the player who creates the most chances and who takes responsibility when the team's intensity drops. Everything goes through his vision and his final pass.
RW: Bryan Mbeumo – Constant diagonal. Starting from the right, he looks to cut inside to combine and get into scoring positions.
LW: Matheus Cunha – Persistent disruptor. He attacks space, draws fouls and provides continuous movement. His ability to break lines off the ball can unsettle a defense that struggles when attacked in behind.
ST: Benjamin Sesko – Hot streak. The Slovenian is enjoying a prolific goalscoring run, with decisive strikes in recent matchweeks. Strong in the air and increasingly clinical in front of goal, he will be United's main attacking reference.
