Manchester United have been riding high since bringing in Michael Carrick as their interim head coach until the end of the season. But having won four games on the trot, a run that includes victories over Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, calls are now growing for the club legend to be handed the job on a permanent basis.
Of course, the last thing that Manchester United can afford to do at this point in time is make any rash decisions and derail the momentum that has been built up over the past few weeks.
Senne Lammens has emerged as the club's first-choice number one between the posts since his arrival. That does not mean that they can overlook the need to have a decent backup option, especially with Andre Onana already out on loan.
According to the outlet Turkish Football, Altay Bayindir is set to remain at Manchester United for the remainder of the season after the club rejected a late loan approach from Besiktas. They are said to be are unwilling to weaken their squad depth.
That is very much the correct decision on the part of the Man Utd think tank. Yes, Bayindir is not someone who has played much since arriving at the club. But if he had left, that would have meant that 39-year-old Tom Heaton would be the cover option for Lammens.
As for Besiktas, it is not hard to understand why they might have been keen on a move for Bayindir. He is proven in Turkish football, having made 145 appearances for Fenerbahce before his move to Manchester United. He has also represented the national team on 11 occasions.
In the long run, perhaps even as early as this summer, there will probably be a discussion regarding Bayindir's place at Manchester United if he is not content being a second-choice goalkeeper. This is not the first time he has been linked with a move away. Celtic were being suggested as a possible destination not too long ago. But for now, the club have made the right decision by sticking with the 27-year-old Turkish international.
