Paul Scholes urges Manchester United to poach Tottenham's fiery defender, Cristian Romero, amid growing discontent and a history of red cards.

Paul Scholes has admitted he would "love" for Manchester United to sign Tottenham's "angry" star player Cristian Romero. The Red Devils legend believes Romero has "given up" on his time at Spurs after the team's poor run of form under manager Thomas Frank, and he wants his former club to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the World Cup-winning Argentine's future.

Romero has played 152 matches for Tottenham since joining the club from Atalanta in 2021, scoring six goals and helping the club win the Europa League. The 27-year-old player recently signed a contract extension until the end of the 2028/29 season, but hinted he is not happy with the club's management after Spurs' 2-2 draw with Manchester City on 1 February, in which he had to be substituted at halftime.

In an explosive Instagram post, Romero wrote: "Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible. I wanted to be available to help them even though I was not well, especially since we only had 11 players available, something incredible but true and shameful. We will keep turning up and taking responsibility for turning this situation around, working hard, and staying united. All I can do is thank you all for being there and for always supporting us, fans."

Despite his outburst, Frank kept Romero in Tottenham's starting lineup for the Saturday afternoon match at Old Trafford. However, the Argentine international only lasted 29 minutes, as he was sent off for a reckless tackle on United midfielder Casemiro.

That was his fourth career red card at Tottenham, more than any other Premier League player since his arrival in English football, and Spurs ended up losing 2-0. However, Frank defended him after the match.

"For me, I think he is a leader. He is a young leader and is learning every day," the Spurs manager told journalists. "I have said I used the example of when I was 30. I thought I was on top of the world, but I was nowhere near the level I am today in terms of leadership and understanding of things. And when you have a player who plays with so much passion and aggression, these things can happen. That does not mean he should not learn from it; of course, he has to learn from it to move forward."

Scholes is also a big admirer of Romero and believes he would be an ideal signing for United, despite his disciplinary record. The former Red Devils and England player said in the latest episode of The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast: "You know what? I love him. I love watching him play football. He is angry with Tottenham, right? He does not want to be there. He is lashing out at the fans, he is lashing out at the board... I think he has kind of given up. But I would love to have him at Manchester United. I love his character."

Romero will miss Tottenham's next four Premier League matches due to a suspension for a "serious foul." Frank's team will host Newcastle on Tuesday night, before the big North London derby against Arsenal and matches against Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Tottenham is also awaiting the Champions League Round of 16 draw in March, in which Romero will be able to play. However, it remains to be seen whether Spurs can climb out of the bottom half of the Premier League table without their captain, or if he decides to stay beyond the end of the season.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid have also shown interest in Romero, who could seek a new challenge after playing in another World Cup with Argentina this summer.
