Manchester United swats away Aston Villa in a key game for UEFA Champions League qualification. Let's take a look at both the positives and negatives from the game.

On Sunday afternoon, Manchester United swept Aston Villa aside with a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford on game week 30 of the current Premier League campaign, hugely boosting their chances of qualifying for next season's UEFA Champions League.

So, what were the main takeaways from the win?

Let's start with the negatives, get them out of the way, and then focus on the positives and what went well.

Although he may have scored, Casemiro seriously struggled with the physicality of the game. After his goal put United ahead, the visitors enjoyed a 10/15-minute spell in which they consistently overran the Reds in the middle of the park, driving through the middle.

With Kobbie Mainoo not being the best athlete either, the midfield becomes a big issue, particularly in these end-to-end games. If the plan is to have the 20-year-old in the starting XI next season, then it is absolutely pivotal that United bring in a seriously athletic, ground-eating midfielder to play alongside him.

The starting XI had a slight red flag. Why was Benjamin Sesko back on the bench? You start to worry that Carrick does not rate him. It felt like a very harsh decision. Others have kept their place for the worse.

Finally, the form of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo is concerning. Neither is playing very well. That said, the former isn't a lone striker in games where United are expected to have similar or more possession than their opponents. Meanwhile, Diallo has just simply not been good enough of late.

So, against AFC Bournemouth on Friday, the play feels like Sesko up front, with Mbeumo off the right-hand side. Right, that's it for negatives - onto the positives.

Aside from the win itself, there were quite a few things to be encouraged about. There has been talk about the fit of Matheus Cunha off the left-hand side, with the Brazilian not being a nominal left winger.

So, to see United's number ten make a fantastic run to get on the end of a sublime Bruno Fernandes pass will be very pleasing for Carrick and his staff. That was really great to see.

Which is a good segue to the next point. Fernandes - what a player. Another two assists today, taking his tally for the season to 16, just four off the Premier League single-season record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne.

As mentioned there, the pass for the Cunha goal was just out of this world good. The quick thinking, the vision, the technique, and the execution. No notes. An incredible player.

Whilst there may have been a stroke of luck with the deflection, it was great to see Sesko grab another goal from the bench. That is now nine Premier League goals in 1313 minutes, which equates to around 14.5 full games. He is averaging a goal every `146 minutes.

Finally, the performance of Harry Maguire was just colossal. A great way to summarise his performance is when Ollie Watkins was isolated against him in the first half, and he just held his nerve, jockeyed at the perfect time, and cleanly won the ball.

During the game, United's number five won 6/7 duels, completed 7/10 long balls, created a decent opportunity for Diallo in the first half, and had 72 touches of the ball in a very assured performance, both on and off the ball.

Thomas Tuchel names his England squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley later this month, on Friday morning, the final games before he decides on his World Cup squad. It will be interesting to see if Maguire - as well as Mainoo and Luke Shaw - are selected.
