Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay firmly dismissed speculation about a possible return to Manchester United. In fact, the Scottish player opened the door to an extended stay at the Partenopei.
McTominay showed an offensive propensity toward the end of his career after coach Erik ten Hag maximized his goalscoring prowess at Old Trafford. The United academy product scored 10 goals in his final season and was believed to feature as a starter when MU lifted the 2024 FA Cup.
In fact, this impressive performance quickly developed at Napoli. Under Antonio Conte, McTommy became one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe. He was named Serie A Player of the Year after his first season, which ended with the league title. This season, McTominay has again reached double figures in goals despite playing deep and being injured for most of the season.
This consistent performance has fueled rumors of a Manchester United "homecoming," especially amid the Red Devils' volatile performances. However, McTominay stressed that this was never in his plans.
"There has been no communication about my future," McTominay told Corriere dello Sport. "My agent only spoke with the club and me. I am very happy here, and until now I am a Napoli player. That's all I think about. The future is important, and I see myself at Napoli for a long time."
Conte himself often praises the development of his team's boys. In his opinion, McTominay has now become a complete midfielder: not only is he skilled at attacking the penalty area, but he is also mature in creating plays and playing a box-to-box role.
At 29 years old and with a contract until 2028, it is believed that Napoli will not let McTominay go cheaply. The Italian club is known for not easily submitting to the financial power of the Premier League.
On the other hand, Manchester United is said to be preparing for a big spending spree to strengthen its midfield next summer. However, in accordance with the post-regeneration plans of Casemiro, their main need is for a purely defensive midfielder. Elliott Anderson, Carlos Baleba, and Adam Wharton are some of the young names on the radar, while Sandro Tonali is also said to be an interesting option.
