McTominay's stunning Napoli season fuels Premier League dreams, with Manchester United reportedly leading the chase for his celebrated return.

Manchester United is "at the front of the queue" regarding a potential transfer for Scott McTominay, according to Italian media reports, as the Scotland international "dreams" of returning to the Premier League. The 29-year-old has enjoyed a productive spell in Italy with Serie A champion Napoli but is open to the idea of returning to English football in 2026.

McTominay completed a £32 million transfer to Napoli in the summer of 2024. His first season after leaving his professional comfort zone earned him the title and the best player award, thus rewriting the history books.

Denis Law's 63-year record as the Scottish player with the most goals scored in a single Serie A season was broken, while McTominay was nominated for the Ballon d'Or and named Player of the Year in Italy.

He has already reached double figures in terms of goals this season, maintaining an impressive level, and has a contract until 2028. However, interest is expected when another transfer window opens.

Napoli admits this, and the club's director of global business development, Leonardo Giammarioli, has stated to talkSPORT that they try to fend off admiring glances coming from afar: "Yes, of course I'm worried. But, ultimately, especially Scott, who is a very nice guy, we are happy if he reaches the next level in a couple of years, maybe not now, maybe not next year, but he deserves it."

Look at Stuttgart, which wanted to keep Nick Woltemade, but when an offer like that [£65m from Newcastle United] comes in, there's not much you can do when the player wants to leave, and the money is important. It's difficult for Italian teams; the Italian league is still losing revenue."

Tuttomercatoweb claims that McTominay is thinking about changing teams in 6, as he and his girlfriend, Cam Reading, are thinking about returning home. It is said that his goal is to sign for the Premier League "sooner rather than later."

The TMW report states: "Those who know him well explain that he is happy in Naples. He is happy with Napoli. But he also dreams of returning, sooner or later, to the Premier League. Among the many teams reportedly willing to welcome him back to England, do you know who is at the front of the queue? Manchester United."

United agreed to transfer McTominay after seeing a product of its legendary youth system accumulate 255 appearances for the club. Questions have been raised about the Red Devils' ability to bring the Scotland international back to a familiar environment.

Former United player Wes Brown recently stated to GOAL, when asked if the deal could be closed: "It would cost Manchester United a lot of money to get him back. I am very happy that Scott left and did so well; he did more than well! He has been excellent."

Will it happen? Probably not. The respect talked about is incredible. What an achievement on Scott's part, for one thing. Sometimes, when you leave really big clubs, it can be difficult to maintain the level; a drop usually occurs. But he has gotten better and better. He's a great guy, and he's determined to give his best. I don't think it's going to happen, but I understand why there are rumors.

Could he return? He has the legs for it. He now plays in the right position, which is not as a defensive midfielder. I've tried to tell people that many, many times. Because he's big, everyone thinks he's a defensive midfielder. He has the legs for it, he can get up and down, and all the fans will tell you he gets in the right position to score goals."
