While Paris Saint-Germain will benefit from its Coupe de France elimination to rest midweek and calmly prepare for Sunday's "Le Classique," Olympique de Marseille will play a decisive Coupe de France match as early as Tuesday against Rennes in a climate of high tension.
For the first time in a month, PSG begins a one-match week. On the heels of its precious victory at Strasbourg (2-1), Luis Enrique's men trained behind closed doors at the Campus starting at 11:30 a.m. this Monday and will be able to rest until Thursday at 5 p.m. Luis Enrique has decided to give them a break after a very intense start to the year and grant them almost two and a half days of rest.
PSG is indeed not involved in the Coupe de France Round of 16, which will be played from Tuesday to Thursday, and will have four training sessions before Sunday night's "Le Classique" against OM, closing the 21st matchday of Ligue 1.
After it trains this Monday morning, PSG will therefore train this Thursday at 5 p.m., then on Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. Luis Enrique will speak to the press at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
For OM, the climate is very different, as is the week's schedule. After being pitifully eliminated from the Champions League last Wednesday, the Phocaean club self-destructed at Jean Bouin on Saturday and conceded a disappointing 2-2 draw against Paris FC after leading 2-0 until the 82nd minute.
According to La Provence, an altercation occurred Sunday at the Commanderie during the training session for the previous day's substitutes between Geoffrey Kondogbia and Arthur Vermeeren, while Roberto De Zerbi lashed out at Amir Murillo and demoted him to the reserve team, also telling him to find a new club.
Last week, there was also talk of a departure for the Italian coach, who is ultimately still in his post, but he had pointed out, before the draw against Paris FC, the lack of stability within his squad. A stone was thrown into the garden of its president, Pablo Longoria.
It is in this very tense context that OM's directors, players, and coach are set to meet with their supporters' group representatives this Monday at the Commanderie. A meeting demanded by the Marseille supporters and one that promises to be very heated.
Before traveling to the Parc des Princes on Sunday, OM will host Rennes on Tuesday night in the Coupe de France Round of 16. A decisive match that could allow the Phocaean club to lift its head with a qualification, but also sink further into crisis in the case of elimination.
Regarding injuries, OM has been without its left-back Emerson Palmieri for four matches, but the latter could return from injury this week, according to his coach. The Marseille squad is, in any case, likely to be shaken up on this last day of the transfer window.
OM welcomed two new signings this Monday, Algerian attacking midfielder Hamed Abdelli (Angers) and Nigerian defensive midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi (Zulte Waregem). Two players who could be involved in Sunday's PSG vs. OM, like the two other winter signings, Quinten Timber and Ethan Nwaneri.
Regarding departures, OM is expected to part ways this Monday with Angel Gomes (loaned to Wolverhampton), Matt O'Riley (returned from loan at Brighton), Darryl Bakola (transferred to Sassuolo), and also Ulisses Garcia (loaned to Sassuolo). Robinio Vaz (AS Roma), Neal Maupay (Sevilla), Pol Lirola (Hellas Verona), and Ruben Blanco (without a club) have already left OM earlier this winter.
For its part, PSG will be without its right-back Achraf Hakimi on Sunday, automatically suspended after his sending off against Strasbourg, but could recover Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Having injured his right ankle last Wednesday against Newcastle, the Georgian is supposed to be out eight to 10 days, noting that his injury occurred 11 days before PSG vs. OM. PSG could also recover Quentin Ndjantou and Fabian Ruiz on Sunday, but that remains to be confirmed during the week.
