Chelsea's goalkeeper's bold words resurface, challenging PSG to a Champions League showdown. Will the Parisians accept the gauntlet thrown down?

A statement from Chelsea's Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has been buzzing on social media since Friday, and the draw for the Champions League round of 16 pitting PSG against the London club. A statement with provocative overtones that is indeed real, but dates back a bit...

"Give us PSG so we can eliminate them, and this time, they'll have no excuses." In a short video that has gone viral in recent days, we see Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez calling for a new duel against PSG, a few months after the Blues' victory in the Club World Cup final, at the end of a match that had degenerated.

This little sequence has inevitably set the web on fire since last Friday and the draw for the Champions League round of 16, which will pit PSG against Chelsea, first at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, March 11, then at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, March 17.

But if this little trash talk from Chelsea's Spanish goalkeeper is real, it actually dates from last Aug. 28, just before the draw for the league phase. Chelsea's community manager at the time asked the London players who they wanted to face away in the Champions League.

Robert Sanchez first expressed the wish to travel to the Bernabeu to challenge Real Madrid, before reconsidering his choice and finally uttering his famous phrase about PSG. Brazilian attacker Joao Pedro, who had clashed with Luis Enrique after the Club World Cup final, also answered PSG and Real Madrid in this video, as did Malo Gusto, who expressed his desire to face "the best teams in the world."

If PSG and Chelsea avoid each other during the league phase, they will meet in the round of 16, with the first leg scheduled in nine days. An opportunity for the Parisian attackers to respond to the Spanish goalkeeper's provocation? Let's wait and see.
