British sports media now salute PSG’s commanding form in the Champions League after the Parisians knocked out Chelsea.
The English media have learned to know and appreciate Paris Saint-Germain since last season. This Wednesday morning, the day after another demonstration against Chelsea, they unanimously salute PSG's return to the forefront at the best moment of the season.
As several English journalists had explained very well to Le Parisien before the match, PSG's image in England has changed since last season and their victorious run in the Champions League. PSG beat Manchester City in the league phase before eliminating Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal during the knockout phase.
These were competitive confrontations, but they allowed the English public to appreciate the quality of play of this new PSG, more collective than ever, and sublime to watch. It is, therefore, without great surprise that the British sports media is admiring this Wednesday after PSG's new demonstration of strength against Chelsea on Tuesday evening.
A 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge and 8-2 over the two matches, which leaves no room for doubt: there is a world of difference between Chelsea and PSG. "On the eve of the Champions League round of 16 second leg, Tuesday at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique had warned: 'We will have difficult moments.' In the end, he had nothing to worry about," writes The Athletic in the preamble to its match analysis.
"A large part of this dull encounter at Stamford Bridge resembled a training exercise for Luis Enrique's team, with 'olé' chants shouted by the visiting supporters in the middle of the first half," continues Tom Burrows, who believes that even if "the road is still long, Luis Enrique's team seems to have found its rhythm at a crucial moment of the season."
The English media indeed missed nothing of the difficulties encountered by PSG this season, but agrees that what has been seen since last week closely resembled a reigning European champion capable of defending its crown: "Ruthless PSG condemn Chelsea to humiliating Champions League elimination," headlines The Guardian on its website, before concluding its match report with this punchline: "Their resounding Club World Cup victory against Paris Saint-Germain was just a summer dream in the United States: here, on the stage that really counts, they were humiliated by opponents who, from the start, operated in another category."
The Daily Mail returns to the leaks in the French press concerning Chelsea's team lineups: "Although it was not constructive, Chelsea cannot blame their heavy defeat in this two-legged tie on the leaks in the French press. And rightly so. Certainly, PSG knew Rosenior's starting lineup for the first leg and took note that Wesley Fofana would not start in the return leg, with Trevoh Chalobah and Jorrel Hato having trained together in central defense. But it was the quality gap – both in terms of the players on the field and the instructions given by their superiors – that made the biggest difference in the end," concedes Kieran Gill.
In another Daily Mail article, Riath Al-Samarrai had difficulty hiding his admiration for PSG: "It was brutal, beautiful and efficient, a glaring demonstration of what can happen when you pit a collection of exceptional players against a disorganized and chaotic club whose recent events have oscillated between strange meetings and illegal transfers. Chelsea may have been lucky to escape without a points deduction in the latter case, but PSG is less indulgent than the spineless leaders of our Premier League."
"No, Luis Enrique's team does not function that way," continues the English journalist. "They are ruthless, relentless, and boundlessly cruel, which allowed them to humiliate Liam Rosenior a second time in the space of seven days." And the latter concludes: "PSG is sublime. PSG is precise. PSG appears to be a serious contender for the ultimate victory. Again."
