As Qatar Sports Investments has been discussing for months with the NBA the possible creation of a Paris Saint-Germain basketball team that would have a spot in NBA Europe, Kevin Durant was asked about his link to PSG and the possibility of getting involved in this project that is generating more and more talk, but remains uncertain.
On the sidelines of the All-Star Game in Los Angeles, overnight Sunday into Monday, American basketball legend Kevin Durant was asked about the NBA Europe project and the possibility that PSG would participate in it.
Durant's opinion is very interesting on the subject as he invested in 2024 in Arctos, the American investment fund that owns 12.5% of PSG, before becoming a direct minority shareholder of the club last summer, through his company Boardroom.
Last night, a journalist thus asked Kevin Durant if he was involved in PSG's project to create a basketball franchise for the possible future NBA Europa, which could come into existence in 2027.
"I wouldn't say I'm involved in the process, but I hear a lot about it. I'm ready to discuss it if the opportunity presents itself," responded the Houston Rockets player. "Right now, I haven't heard much, only rumors and stories. Once the project starts to materialize, I hope I can contribute and grow the game around the world. I would be delighted to."
Last January, Adam Silver had spoken from London about the NBA Europe project and confirmed discussions with PSG: "They play at the highest level of competition (in soccer) and they have the know-how to operate a basketball club at the highest level, if that interests them. Yes, it's a club we are talking with," the NBA commissioner had said, in comments reported by L'Equipe.
"Paris is a market we absolutely want to be in," Mark Tatum, the NBA's No. 2, confirmed. "There's their ability to create a brand, a culture, their association with the Jordan brand (of Michael Jordan), which is itself linked to basketball. We are looking for the right partners for our project and PSG brings a very interesting level of expertise in terms of marketing, promotion and building a global brand."
Several questions remain unanswered, such as the place that Paris Basketball, founded in 2018, would or would not take in this NBA Europe project. Above all, no one yet knows the price of the entry ticket to have a franchise in NBA Europe.
Bloomberg mentioned early January the staggering sum of $1 billion to acquire the rights to a franchise in NBA Europe, while specifying that the NBA might not require a significant initial investment from investors and would consider allowing them to acquire shares progressively over several years.
Is PSG ready to invest so much in a project exciting on paper, but still very unclear in terms of potential economic returns? Would it want (or have interest in) starting from a blank slate or buying Paris Basketball? Recently, PSG explained that it was waiting for the precise specifications from the NBA before going further. If the project were to materialize, Kevin Durant would, in any case, probably be part of it and a weighty ally for PSG.
