After PSG's victory in Monaco, following a crazy scenario with a catastrophic start and a joyful ending, Luis Enrique, who was well aware of having avoided the worst, spoke at a press conference.
The coach did not try to hide his team's poor start, but he appreciated the comeback, symbolized by Doue. He also discussed the case of Dembele, who was injured again but, according to him, fit to play. Here are his full comments.
Are you surprised by your team? By coming back from two goals down, overcoming different obstacles, with the missed penalty and Ousmane Dembele's injury? Surprised by the mental resources and the psychological aspect of your team?
"Normally, when a team starts the match this way, the most logical thing is to lose the match and continue to be catastrophic. And I must say it's impossible to have confidence when you start the match this way. Because the first two times (the Monégasques) foiled our pressing, they got into our half of the field and they scored the first two goals. They executed two very good actions. After that, it's difficult to have confidence at 2-0. These are particular moments, special, difficult to manage.
But we were able to react again. The players showed their level and their mental aspect. Plus, we missed a penalty, even though it was a special moment to regain confidence. But I must say that in the last six times we played here (in Monaco), it's only the second time we've won. That shows the difficulty of playing here. In the end, I'm happy with the result and with what we showed. It's a shame we didn't score one more goal because we created many chances, [and more] especially when we played 11 against 10."
This match was also marked by Ousmane Dembele's injury. It's not the first time he's felt discomfort, that he starts and comes out... Is there special management for him? Can you tell us more? This seems somewhat unclear.
"It's football, it's normal. We seek to manage each player individually. We clearly understand the difficulties each player faces. But, that's all."
Didn't you take risks? Was he fit to start?
"No risk. He trained normally. We have to wait until tomorrow after the exams to know the exact nature of the injury, if there is an injury or if it's just a knock he received. After 15 minutes, he couldn't run anymore. We did what we could, but we seek to manage this as best we can. It's true that in high-level football, there are injuries and players more accustomed to this [than others], but we know how to handle all this the best way."
We were expecting a lot from Desire Doue in this match. He had a somewhat complicated performance in Rennes. What did you think of his reaction and his performance with two goals and an assist?
"What we know is that we are a very young team. Last year, we were a team that no one expected to win. Which means the pressure is [now] different: everyone knows we can win against any team. And it's a different pressure to manage.
I am very happy for Desire because last week, everyone criticized Doue and the players. And tonight, he was sensational. He showed his character and his personality as a player. He is very young, but he has a special level of personality. I am very happy for him. He helped the team at the best of times, and it's very important for us. But we remain a very young team. We love (having) this expectation ("pressure") of a new victory [in the Champions League] and that's what we will seek to do until the last match."
Defensively, what did you think of your players' match? You were talking about the start of the match... Were you not ready?
"I think we are one of the teams in the league and in the Champions League that defends the best. There are statistics that can show this. But as usual, football is special, particular. In the first minute, you see the action they carried out: incredible, very difficult to defend. And we start the match in the worst way. After that, the second time they have a chance, they score the goal and it's good for them. And after that it's such a different match, that we were able to turn around but that normally... (he stops himself). I repeat myself, but normally it's very difficult to overcome.
I would like to take this opportunity and emphasize how incredible our supporters are. Whether as a player or a coach, I have never seen supporters of this caliber. When we were losing 2-0, I only heard our supporters, all the time. All the time. Normally, supporters of a team losing 2-0 start to criticize, to whistle. On the contrary, our supporters are there all the time, incredible. I want to dedicate this victory to them. (In Spanish) We are infinitely grateful to our supporters."
Finally, don't you regret leaving with only a one-goal lead given the second half?
"It's not the worst, obviously, because the match changed with Golovin's expulsion. After that, we had many chances because they defended in a low block. But it's a shame we didn't score another goal, because we had very clear chances. But given how we started the match, I'm happy with the result. The match in Paris will be difficult and complicated. But it's another story, it will be another story."
At 2-0, what did you say to yourself?
"That I would like to go home (to join) my wife and my children. It's very easy..."
