Luis Enrique revealed tactical shifts and gave injury updates after PSG's dominant 4-0 victory.
A very satisfied Luis Enrique, and for once talkative, faced the press after Nice vs. PSG (0-4).
The Parisian coach discussed his sometimes difficult-to-follow lineup choices, commented on Dro's first goal, and provided an update on penalty takers and the two new injuries. Here are his complete remarks, as transcribed.
Q: Good evening, coach. Was this the perfect evening for you before heading into the international break with a win like this and returning to first place in Ligue 1?
A: "Yes, I think so, a perfect evening."
Q: Can you explain your choices a bit? Starting Nuno Mendes higher up on the left, Kvara as a striker, and moving Beraldo to midfield when he came on? Were these bold choices?
A: "It's very clear. I think it clearly shows the type of team we are. Today, Nuno Mendes played more as a winger, but also with the freedom to play in the spaces between the lines. He can also play as a No. 9, and we also played with Beraldo in midfield. I am delighted to see this player, who has the technical ability to play in midfield, and it was a very pleasant surprise.
This is what we show — seeking to improve our players, seeking to have players who can help the team. I am especially happy with Beraldo, with Lucas Hernandez, who played as usual. Every time he gets the opportunity, he shows his level. I am very happy with Dro, who scored his first goal with us. He also showed his ability to arrive in the opponent's penalty area. I am especially happy with all these things, because it's important for the team."
Q: You had two players who came off injured. Mayulu and Lee. Can you talk about that?
A: "Lee, you could see the foul (Note: Youssouf stepped on his heel and was sent off). It was very clear, it's a red card. It's a knock, and I hope he's OK. In Senny Mayulu's case, we have to wait until tomorrow because he doesn't know whether he received a knock or has a muscular issue. We have to wait until tomorrow."
Q: Nice was well-organized and compact in the first half. Was that practically an interesting challenge for you?
A: "Every match brings pressure and difficulty, every opponent brings pressure and difficulty. Every time we play here in Nice, it's difficult. Today, especially after a Champions League knockout match, it's very difficult to find the motivation to perform. From the first minutes, we controlled the match and created three genuine chances to score in the first half. We scored first, and after that, we controlled the match. It wasn't easy, and that's why we're very happy. These are three important points because Lens continues and is improving its level. It will be difficult until the end."
Q: We saw Nuno Mendes convert the penalty in the first half, an area where PSG had sometimes struggled before. I imagine it reassures you to see him score that penalty. Was it your decision to have him as the taker today? We also saw Doue and Vitinha with the ball, so how did that choice come about?
A: "I'm fortunate to have many scorers in general, players who have the ability, and they've shown it throughout this past season. Every time there have been penalty kicks, we've shown our ability. But I think it's important to give them confidence. It's Marquinhos or Vitinha who decides who takes the penalty. It depends on each match, it depends on the moment of the match, on the confidence they have. We have many players, and it's normal that only the players who take penalties might miss them. We have confidence always, in all the scorers. It's not a problem. Today, it was Nuno (Mendes) who took it. For the next match, it could be Vitinha, Ousmane, Doue, Kvara, or Lee. There are many players who take penalties."
Q: Is this type of match also an opportunity to test things, to use Ligue 1 a bit like a laboratory?
A: "For me as a coach, the most important thing is to know everything around the team in this type of match after the Champions League. After this, there will be the international break; then we play against Toulouse on Friday, with many players traveling and returning. It will be another challenge, and we need to be ready for the upcoming matches. But in this moment, it's normal for players to be focused on their national teams. We love to see our players represent their countries. And today, once again, we showed that we are capable of improving and overcoming various difficulties."
Q: You were satisfied with Dro's performance. Can you give a brief assessment of his first two months, his integration both on the field and within the group? Are you surprised by how quickly he has integrated?
A: "I'm not surprised because I know him perfectly. But he's only 18 years old, I think he's improving and showing it. But he played only 15 minutes, plus stoppage time. But that's it. His style of play is very easy to adapt to our needs. This type of player with quality is very important. He can play more as a midfielder next to the defense. But I think one of his best qualities is his ability to make runs in behind like he did today, this ability to score goals because he has that quality with his feet."
