Safonov's heroic shootout seals PSG's sixth trophy. Enrique praises Flamengo, discusses a historic 2025, and looks ahead to more wins.

A happy Luis Enrique, having won another trophy, appeared at the press conference after the Intercontinental Cup final against Flamengo.

Well aware that his team had a tough match against a Flamengo side he feared, the PSG coach praised his defeated opponent and touched on several topics: Safonov the hero, PSG's incredible 2025 year, what's next, etc. Here are his complete remarks, translated and transcribed.

What is your analysis of this final? Do you regret allowing Flamengo back into it? And have you ever seen a goalkeeper stop four penalties in a row in a shootout like that?

"To be honest, I think we saw a very good match, with a Flamengo team that plays very well, and it was very difficult. I think we had a good first half, especially the start. We pressed very well, we played in the opponent's half. We scored a goal with Fabian (Ruiz), but it was disallowed. We played a very good match; it was very difficult. We knew the difficulty of the match beforehand, we knew the quality of Flamengo, and in the end, we went all the way to extra time and penalties. And it's the first time I've seen my goalkeeper stop four penalties. We are happy to keep winning trophies, and we deserve to win this one."

Congratulations, you are winning a sixth trophy. What does it mean to win it here in Doha?

"For us, it's always special to come here to Doha. We are happy every time we come here. Playing this match means a lot because it means we won the Champions League, and it's beautiful to have another badge on our shirt for next year. We have again shown the mentality we had all last season. There is still one French Cup match before the Christmas break, and after, our objective will be the same as last year: to keep winning and playing good football."

Was starting Safonov a tactical choice, or is Chevalier still not fully fit? Can a performance like Safonov's create more competition and lead to a change at No. 1 goalkeeper, or are things clear for you?

"Do you think this is the time to talk about that? Really? This is the time to be very happy, this is the time to enjoy and celebrate this trophy, this is the time to congratulate everyone, those who played and those who didn't, and this is the time to congratulate our supporters. We want to keep making history, and that is the objective of this season. But at this moment, we just need to enjoy this time."

Congratulations on the work you do in training. You are a great coach, very appreciated in Saudi Arabia, in Arab countries, and all over the world. Bravo (applause in the room).

"(Luis Enrique responds in Spanish) Thank you very much, but the victory belongs to everyone: to those who suffer with the team, the supporters, the players, the President, the Emir, the sporting director, the staff, the coach, everyone who makes up Paris Saint-Germain. I think that over these two and a half seasons, soon to be three, we have shown intensity, the desire to play football that our supporters enjoy, and to win trophies. We have shown we are on the right path, and we must continue like this."

I would like to ask you about Filipe Luis, whom you already know as a player and faced for the first time as a coach. What did you think? What were your impressions of the Brazilian coach, and do you think he has a place in Europe?

"There is no doubt! When I analyzed—well, we analyzed Flamengo—it was evident. Not only does his team win, but it also plays well. It knows how to defend in any style. It knows how to defend by pressing high, and it can defend deep. It's a very high-level team, very compact, with very good players, with a collective mentality similar to ours. I believe that today, we have to strive for excellence to hope to beat Flamengo. Obviously, Filipe (Luis) has a place in Europe, with any team in the world. He is still very young, he has just begun his coaching career, but I am certain his teams will work well because he already has a very clearly identifiable style of play."

The following question is completely inaudible, so we will simply publish his response, but it seemed the journalist asked him if his team is the one to beat.

"I believe a team like ours, and ours in particular (ed. note: yes, he repeats himself), which clearly has very high objectives, has become a reference team, and therefore a team that everyone wants to beat, which is logical. I think this year, 2025, is an impossible year to reproduce for Paris Saint-Germain, an unforgettable year. From here, we intend to continue with a very positive mix on the field of experienced players and young players, to keep bringing happiness to our supporters, and to try to win all the trophies."

Filipe Luis said that the PSG plane must be very comfortable to arrive in Doha before such a stressful match. How do you assess today's match? Did you think it would be easy?

"(He is very surprised) Easy? No, it was very difficult. But the quality of my players, their mentality, that spirit we have for playing football was there, and it was a real pleasure to play against a team that plays very well, like Flamengo. We played a very good match, especially the first period, which was incredible defensively. We pressed Flamengo the entire time and managed to control that first half. In the second half, especially after the penalty, it was more balanced and very, very difficult. I must congratulate Flamengo not only for today's match but for the season. They won almost everything, and they played very good football."

I believe you are finishing the year 2025 with 4 titles if I'm not mistaken, and one lost final, the Club World Cup final. Well, a final reached is a better way to put it. With what word would you define this year? Is it the best of your career? And how do you maintain motivation now after such a successful year?

"Four titles? No. It's more. Up, up... (he adopts a joking tone) I don't know, you've let a couple fall over there, but okay. I know you don't all like me, but let me have my trophies. At Paris Saint-Germain, everything counts. Six trophies. (he switches to French) Not bad! We must continue. It is our mentality to keep winning, to keep making history. That is what we want."
