Frustrated by a "bizarre" result, Luis Enrique dissects PSG's shock Coupe de France exit, praising performance despite the loss.
Following Paris Saint-Germain's elimination against Paris FC in the Coupe de France (0-1), it was a frustrated Luis Enrique, but not particularly by the performance, who spoke at the press conference. Here are his complete remarks.
How do you explain what happened tonight? Fatigue, complacency?
"I think it’s very easy to define this match. It was a very complete match, and we played very well. We created a lot of chances, we did the job well, we deserved it, and we dominated the match. No problem with the match! But it's a sport in which you have to score goals; they scored one, and we didn't. That's football. But I am very happy with what I saw, with how the team played collectively and individually. The result is unfair for me, but you have to accept it, that's all. I wish Paris FC the best in the competition, but it's clear that I am happy with what I saw."
Does this nonetheless serve as a warning for the rest of the season, to lose a first trophy in France? It's the first you will lose since your arrival.
"If you look at the result, maybe. But what I saw throughout the entire match, we were vastly superior. That's football, it's not fair. You have to know how to lose and, in this case, it's clear to me that it's a totally bizarre result."
On the positive side, does this allow you to tell yourself the schedule will be less congested, to also recharge the batteries a bit because we saw that the team is perhaps a bit tired at times?
"Every day, there are many positive things, and you have to look at it that way. It's not our objective, of course, because it's a competition we love, but you have to accept it. That's how it is. But I think if I had to lose a match or a competition, I would like to lose matches this way."
We know, you've started saying it, Paris Saint-Germain has a bit of a history with this competition, and you are the two-time defending champion. Does that mean that, when you still draw a line under this competition this season, it's a stoppage for you at the start of this year?
"I repeat myself. What I want to see is what I saw from my players individually and as a team. I'm sure tomorrow, when I re-watch the match, I will have that feeling even more strongly. I am very at ease with my players and the team. And with our supporters too."
You defend your players; you always have the habit of defending your players. If we flip the question, what can you say to them so that tomorrow is better than what happened tonight?
"Better than today, that's difficult. It will be difficult. Better than today? We dominated, we did everything (that was needed) in the first half, and in the second half. But better than today, difficult. But you have to score goals, that's football. Football, when you only look at the result, you have to score goals. It's the way (of scoring goals) that needs to be improved. But I think the performance was of a very high level."
Can tonight's defeat, under conditions that are a bit particular to hear you tell it, spice up the rivalry that could exist in the coming seasons between Paris SG and Paris FC a bit more?
"Not especially."
