After a Paris Saint-Germain vs. Marseille match (5-0) that delighted the public and observers, the Parisian coach Luis Enrique was, however, rather calm and measured in the press conference.
He reflected on the match without overdoing it, got excited about Ousmane Dembele, and was even playful with the Spanish press who questioned him about his future. Here are his complete remarks.
Beyond the result, if we really put it aside, was this your team's best match this season?
"No. In Lisbon (against Sporting, 1-2), I think we played a very good, incredible match. But because the result wasn't good... When we judge a match, if you have the chances, if you scored this number of goals today, and we also hit the post four times, I think we deserved even (more), and we created many chances. And it's not difficult (Note: he probably means easy) when we do that against a team of this level. But during the season, I remember matches better than today's."
You spoke about individual quality tonight, also about confidence. There is one player who probably comes out of this full of confidence, that's Ousmane Dembele. We saw it even before he scored, in his very aggressive attitude, in his pressing, talking a lot to the players. Are you satisfied, beyond his goals and his performance, with what he projected on the field tonight?
"Yesterday, you asked me if Ousmane was inconsistent. Incredible, it's incredible! Ok. I like inconsistent players like Ousmane. Because it's incredible! Ousmane, for me, and I said it from the first day when he arrived, is a different player. With the ball, and here in Paris, he has added (play) without the ball. The way he presses, the way he plays, the way he shows his ability and his level, it's always very consistent. And this season, because we started the season with many injured players, it's difficult to have or to find your level. But every time he is in condition, he is very special. That's why he is the Ballon d'Or."
In the period where your team had a bit less efficiency, even if the content was good, like in Lisbon or Newcastle, were you satisfied with your players' behavior in the group? Several times during matches, we see them talking, exchanging, telling each other things. Does that make you proud, a team that communicates like that?
"I think when you play a match like the one we played today, it's very important for confidence. We have played many matches at a very high level, but there are matches without the efficiency. And to win football matches, you need that. But if I talk so much about the way the team presses, the way the team plays with the ball, we can be more lucid or less, but I am happy and I think we continue on the trajectory of last year. The best moment of the season is arriving, and this result, I repeat, is important in terms of confidence."
We saw the supporters going wild, you just talked about them, saying they deserved this victory, they didn't give up on you, they pushed. Would you have a word for them?
"Of course, I said it to Rafel (Pol, his assistant) and to Borja (the goalkeeping coach), before starting the match when we saw the tifo. It's incredible, the level of the supporters at every match, especially these matches like the 'Classico,' but at every match, it's incredible. We are used to it, and I remember that it's not easy to have supporters of this level, they are there all the time, every match we lose, every match where we have problems, they are there and it's a real pleasure to have these supporters."
You praised Roberto De Zerbi's merits during the Trophee des Champions match, saying he was an excellent coach. Did you understand that he is still playing with a three-man defense, whereas in recent weeks he has been greatly struggling with this tactical system? Are you surprised by the lack of pressing, the lack of desire, the lack of hunger from the players, when that's what he demanded all week long?
"I spoke about De Zerbi yesterday and I have the same feeling. Football, it's difficult to find solutions, it depends on the matches. But for me, he is a great coach that I like, because I like the way he manages his teams, and it's a real pleasure to see him coach at this level, to know he plays to win, to attack. For me, as a coach, he is one of the best in this league. He has experience, he is still young but I like this way of coaching. And especially, like today, because coaches always depend on results, it changes nothing of what I think of him."
A word about the goalkeepers, even though Safonov didn't have much to do tonight. Your vision is still the same: you have two number ones, is there a challenge between the two goalkeepers, or is this the kind of match that convinces you of the idea that maybe you need to...
"I am lucky to have three incredible goalkeepers. Lucas Chevalier, Renato (Marin), and at the moment, Motya (his nickname) Safonov. Three very high-level goalkeepers. And more than talking individually about what they show, the important thing is that all three are ready to help the team for any match."
The last question is asked by a Spanish journalist, in Spanish.
Given the communion that currently exists between the team and the supporters, the esteem in which the entire club and everyone here in Paris holds you, is it realistic to think that you will stay beyond 2027? Is it a scenario you are starting to consider?
(He takes his time and then answers in Spanish) "The Spanish always hit right there, pam, on the sensitive spot, pam." (He switches to French) "I am very happy in Paris. Ici c'est Paris!"
