PSG's defensive targets Upamecano and Konate remain unattainable. A massive Liverpool signing complicates matters further.

Monitoring the contract situation of Dayot Upamecano, Paris Saint-Germain will have to look elsewhere to reinforce its central defense this summer, as the French international is on track to extend with Bayern Munich.

Ibrahima Konate has still not extended at Liverpool, which just invested €70 million in a young French central defender.

The winter transfer window has just closed in Europe, but the major maneuvers have already begun for some clubs in view of next season.

Liverpool broke its piggy bank by spending no less than €70 million, bonuses included, to acquire promising young French central defender Jeremy Jacquet, 20.

The Rennes player has committed to the Reds until 2031, with an additional optional year, but will only join Liverpool this summer. For what role? That of a starter, according to Fabrizio Romano, who assures the Reds promised significant playing time to Jeremy Jacquet, who was also heavily pursued by Chelsea.

This transfer could well have a direct impact on the future of Ibrahima Konate, as the 26-year-old French international's contract expires in June 2026 and he still has not reached an agreement with the Reds to extend. Konate is one of the potential major opportunities of the next summer transfer window, and his name has already been linked with Real Madrid and PSG.

The other major opportunity of the summer of 2026 could have been Dayot Upamecano, 27, also linked with Real Madrid, PSG, and even Liverpool. But despite very complicated negotiations between his agent Moussa Sissoko (the same as Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, and Bradley Barcola) and Bayern's directors, Upamecano is indeed headed towards a contract extension in Bavaria.

According to several sources (Fabrizio Romano, the German version of Sky Sport, and Bild), Upamecano has reached an agreement with his directors to extend his contract until 2030 with a new salary estimated at €20 million gross per season.

His agent Moussa Sissoko also wanted a €20 million signing bonus, payable in one lump sum, but according to the German press, Upamecano will have to settle for a €16 million signing bonus, which will be paid to him over the course of his new contract, in several installments.

The German press adds that Upamecano also negotiated a release clause set at €65 million, valid starting in the summer of 2027. The Upamecano option is therefore to be forgotten for PSG regarding the summer of 2026, but RMC Sport confirms that the Parisian club was indeed among the clubs ready to make an offer, provided, of course, that he did not extend.

Given the difficulties of Marquinhos, 31, this season and the mixed first months of Ilya Zabarnyi, 23, it is not far-fetched to think PSG will try to recruit a right-footed central defender this summer. Lucas Beraldo, 22, and Lucas Hernandez, 29, both left-footed, are also not certain to remain at PSG next season, so the central defender position could well be one of the major projects for Luis Campos and Luis Enrique this summer.
