Last summer, PSG spent €55 million to secure the services of Lucas Chevalier. The goalkeeper had mixed beginnings against Tottenham in the European Super Cup and went on to play the first 20 matches of the Rouge & Bleu season despite inconsistent performances.
Injured in the ankle against Monaco on 29 November, he let Matvey Safonov play four matches before the latter also got injured.
The French international, therefore, reclaimed his place. But after another poor performance against Sporting, he once again surrendered his place in the PSG goal to the Russian goalkeeper, who seems to have gained an edge over Lucas Chevalier.
A PSG legend, Bernard Lama, wanted to come to the defense of the former Lille player.
"I think first of all that Chevalier did not arrive in Paris in a good context. A large portion of the supporters did not understand why Donnarumma left, why the club made this change," said Bernard Lama on the Late Football Club on Canal Plus Foot.
"Automatically, that put extra, unnecessary pressure on Chevalier. How can you, the media, attack a guy like that, still very young for this position, talented... How can you come down on him like that, almost waiting for him to make a mistake so you can point it out? I heard Luis Enrique say he has three good goalkeepers and they can all play. That is not false. I think they are all at the same level. I find it logical, as with outfield players, that there are changes. The established No. 1 was for a certain era. If you have two, even three goalkeepers of the same level, what is important is mainly their connection with their teammates, with the team," he added.
"It is a holistic management. There are many matches now. In my time at PSG, I went to see Artur Jorge to tell him I had too many matches and that I wanted to see Luc Borelli play Cup matches. They are players, not machines. Sometimes you need a break, even after good matches. He will work, he will come back. In my opinion, there is not that big a gap between him and Safonov. He is still a young guy; we must not forget that. He does not have the experience of the very top level with several clubs. We are in Paris, European champions, a reference in terms of quality. And he is not the only one struggling at PSG."
