PSG retains Ligue 1 dominance as Lens lost at Lorient.
Not involved in weekend matches with the postponement of their game against Nantes, PSG nevertheless remains at the top of Ligue 1 because Lens failed to win at Lorient.
PSG saw their weekend match against FC Nantes postponed to better prepare for their Champions League round of 16 second leg against Chelsea, and this postponement could have cost them the lead in the French championship, since their main competitor, RC Lens, played their matchday 26 Ligue 1 match as scheduled.
But by not winning at the Merlus' ground, Racing missed the opportunity to take the lead in the championship.
PSG Maintains Ligue 1 Lead Without Playing as Lens Falls at Lorient
It is even better than that for the Parisians, since RC Lens lost at the Moustoir ground to a Lorient side that is decidedly formidable against the championship's big teams.
The Merlus opened the scoring through former Marseille player Bamba Dieng in the first half, but Lens very logically equalized, through Odsonne Edouard at the beginning of the second half. It was substitute Aiyegun Tosin, just off the bench, who gave the victory to Lorient shortly after the hour mark. Lens pushed hard afterward, but without managing to come back or even pose much of a threat.
In the standings, PSG therefore maintains a one-point lead over Lens, but now with one more match to play. This will not be anytime soon, since the PSG vs. Nantes match on matchday 26 has been postponed to the week of Aug. 20, which is more than a month away.
Ligue 1 standings after the first matches of matchday 26:
- PSG: 57 points (+32)
- Lens: 56 points (+26) (+1 match)
- Marseille: 49 points (+20) (+1 match)
- Lyon: 46 points (+13)
- Rennes: 43 points (+7)
