France's Situation

It's a very difficult week for France. Six of its representatives played this week, except Strasbourg, as the UEFA Europa Conference League league phase is already finished. And of these six matches played this week, France has only two victories.

They occurred in the Europa League. Lyon beat Young Boys (0-1) and, surprise, OGC Nice won a European match, against Go Ahead Eagles (3-1). On the other hand, Lille was defeated in Vigo against Celta (2-1), and the three French clubs in the Champions League also lost. Paris in Lisbon (2-1), Marseille against Liverpool (0-3), and Monaco at Real Madrid (6-1).

Regarding qualifications for the next stages, PSG will be in the next round of the Champions League, hopefully in the top 8. Marseille and Monaco are set for a playoff, but will absolutely need to win next week at Bruges and against Juventus, respectively. In the Europa League, Lyon is still top of the ranking and assured of playing in the competition's round of 16.

Lille can secure a playoff spot but will need to beat Freiburg at home. However, Nice is already eliminated and can hope at best for a 26th-place finish in the Europa League league phase ranking (currently 33rd).

Finally, in the Europa Conference League, Strasbourg did honor to its standing and finished atop the overall Europa Conference League league phase ranking, directly qualified for the round of 16. It will be possible to have 6 out of 7 clubs still in contention after the final matchdays if all goes well, but for some clubs, one can still have doubts.

As for France's pursuers, the Netherlands will lose Utrecht in the Europa League. Go Ahead Eagles and Feyenoord are in an unfavorable position (2 points behind Celtic, the last qualifier in the Europa League).

PSV Eindhoven is in the same position as Marseille and Monaco in the Champions League; barring a miracle, Ajax Amsterdam's journey should end after the final matchday. Finally, in the Europa Conference League, AZ Alkmaar qualified for the playoffs.

For Portugal, Sporting will continue its journey, at a minimum in the Champions League playoffs. Braga is qualified for the playoffs and can remain in the top 8 of the Europa League, just as Porto can join it after the final matchday (tied on points with Real Betis, 8th). For Benfica, a miracle will also be needed to obtain a place in the Champions League top 24.

For the current season, France has an average of 12,071 points, the 7th-best European performance. France is just behind Portugal (13,050 points), Italy (13,071 points), Spain (13,312 points), and the surprising Poland (13,625 points). France leads Cyprus (11,406 points), Greece (10,650 points), and Denmark (10,500 points). The catastrophic performance of the Netherlands, only 12th with 8,479 points, should be noted.

A windfall for France in the overall national ranking, which sees its lead over the Netherlands grow further. Before the final matchday of the league phases, France holds a 10,819-point lead over the Dutch and an 11,532-point lead over Portugal.
