PSG followed the outcome of the municipal elections in Paris and made a first step toward Emmanuel Grégoire, the new mayor, who wants to restart discussions with the club regarding the Parc des Princes.
What if the sale of the Parc des Princes to PSG were revived by the election of Emmanuel Grégoire in Paris? A former deputy to Anne Hidalgo, who had fallen out with Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the new mayor of Paris, is in favor of selling the stadium to PSG, as he repeated during his campaign. But the politician has set conditions, such as refusing naming rights, and there is no guarantee he will convince PSG.
Tired of wasting time on this issue that has dragged on for several years, PSG's management launched efforts nearly two years ago to consider building a brand-new stadium outside Paris, with Massy and Poissy as possible destinations.
The election of Emmanuel Grégoire as head of the Paris city hall will at least have the merit of allowing the city and the club to renew dialogue. The mayor recently indicated that he would like to finalize negotiations with PSG by the end of the summer, which seems like a very ambitious timeline.
Proof that PSG is at least not closed off and has not definitively ruled out the Parc des Princes option, Le Parisien reports that Nasser Al-Khelaifi personally wrote to Emmanuel Grégoire to congratulate him after his victory on Sunday. "Respectful and warm words, a first-hand experience before embarking on tough discussions," the regional daily added.
Journalist Bruno Salomon (Ici Paris IdF) adds that the PSG president informed the new mayor of Paris that he would soon be invited to the Parc des Princes. A first contact was described as "exciting" by a source close to the matter.
While the new mayor of Paris is in favor of selling the Parc des Princes to PSG, the price will obviously be central, given that, if PSG buys the stadium, it will have to renovate and expand it, which will inevitably be very costly. Issues related to naming rights (which Emmanuel Grégoire does not want) and the development of the Porte de Saint-Cloud area will also be at the heart of discussions.
On Tuesday, Le Parisien confirmed that PSG executives and the club's American minority shareholder (Arctos, which has just been acquired by an even more powerful fund called KKR) are rather in favor of building a new stadium, but here again, nothing will be simple, and numerous obstacles could stand in the club's way.
To summarize, the election of Emmanuel Grégoire will allow for renewed dialogue and revive the possibility of the club purchasing the Parc des Princes, but everything remains highly uncertain in this strategic, long-running matter.
