A week from the Sporting CP vs. Paris Saint-Germain match in the UEFA Champions League, the Portuguese club is dealing with several injuries and will also be without its Danish captain, Morten Hjulmand, who is suspended. A look at Lisbon's absences one week from this seventh matchday of the league phase.
The reigning double champion of Portugal and also winner of the Portuguese Cup last spring, Sporting CP will host PSG in a week for the seventh matchday of the Champions League's league phase.
And the Lisbon club, which currently occupies 14th place in the Champions League standings (and 2nd in the domestic league), is dealing with several injuries and doubts a week from this major European fixture.
Sporting CP, which will play this Friday against Casa Pia in the league after ten days without a match, has been without its Belgian central defender Zeno Debast for two and a half months, after he injured his knee during his team's 2-1 win against Marseille last Oct. 22. The former Anderlecht player has not played since and is very doubtful for the visit of PSG, although he could resume training this week.
Greek forward Fotis Ioannidis injured his knee during the match against Vitoria Guimarães last Jan. 6, and according to the latest information from the daily A Bola, he will have to stop for a few days to treat his injury. Virtually ruled out for this Friday, the Greek is not officially out against PSG yet, but is very doubtful.
In a week, however, the Portuguese club will definitely be without its central defender, Eduardo Quaresma, who underwent jaw surgery after being injured against Vitoria Guimarães last week. Portuguese left back Nuno Santos, victim of a patella rupture in October 2024, has still not played since and will also miss the clash against PSG, as will Geovany Quenda, once linked with PSG but later signed by Chelsea. The young and talented Portuguese winger underwent surgery on the fifth metatarsal of his right foot three weeks ago and will be out until March.
Another injured Portuguese winger for Sporting CP and normally ruled out against PSG is Pedro Goncalves, known as Pote, a victim of recurring muscle injuries in recent months. Finally, Ricardo Mangas (Portuguese left back) and Salvador Blopa (18-year-old Portuguese winger) have also been injured recently, but according to Record, they are in the final phase of their recovery program and could be reintegrated into the Portuguese squad this weekend.
Against PSG, Sporting CP will also be without its Danish midfielder and captain, Morten Hjulmand, who is suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards. On the positive news front for the club coached by Rui Borges is the return from the Africa Cup of Nations of Ivorian central defender Ousmane Diomande, who is expected to play as early as this Friday against Casa Pia. Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme, signed this winter from West Ham for $14 million, will not be eligible to play against PSG in the Champions League.
It is thus a significantly weakened Portuguese club that will challenge PSG next Tuesday. PSG is, for the moment, still without Matvey Safonov, Lee Kang-in, and Quentin Ndjantou, who are in the recovery phase after their injuries. Regarding Ibrahim Mbaye (Senegal) and Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), both will play their AFCON semifinal this Wednesday, against Egypt and Nigeria, respectively.
But even if they are eliminated from the competition this Wednesday, the two will not return to Paris immediately, as the third-place match will take place Saturday starting at 5 p.m., while the final will be played Sunday starting at 8 p.m. Seeing the two African internationals as early as next Tuesday in Lisbon, therefore, seems a bit presumptuous, although technically possible, especially if they only play the third-place match.
