This ref has history with both Monaco and PSG, but his whistle may favor the Parisians. A familiar, yet potentially decisive, presence.

UEFA has appointed experienced Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano to officiate the Champions League playoff first leg between Monaco and PSG on Tuesday evening at Louis II. A referee both teams know well, but one who has been more favorable to PSG.

Two days before the Champions League playoff first leg, UEFA appointed the referees for the Monaco-PSG showdown and it is Spain's Jesus Gil Manzano (42) who was chosen to officiate this match between two Ligue 1 clubs.

A referee, Luis Enrique, crossed paths with him several times in LaLiga when he coached Barcelona, but not only.

Jesus Gil Manzano was indeed the referee of last October's spectacular Leverkusen-PSG match (2-7), which featured Ilya Zabarnyi's red card and two penalties logically given to the Germans.

Why Monaco and PSG Know Tuesday's Referee All Too Well

Before that, the Spanish referee had already officiated PSG four times in his career: a 2-1 loss at Milan (October 2023), a 2-0 win against Dortmund (September 2023), a 1-1 draw at Benfica (October 2022) and a 4-1 win against Brugge (December 2021).

The Spanish referee, who awarded a penalty to PSG against Dortmund and Brugge, also gave one to Monaco in the final moments last October during AS Monaco's 2-2 draw against Manchester City.

Before that, Jesus Gil Manzano had officiated two other Monaco matches: a Champions League preliminary round loss 3-2 in extra time by the Monégasques against PSV (August 2022) and another 2-1 loss at Fenerbahce in July 2016.

This season, the Spanish referee has overseen 22 total matches with 82 yellow cards, 6 red cards and 8 penalties given. Throughout his career, his record stands at 532 matches officiated with 2,712 yellow cards, 88 second cautions, 69 red cards and 181 penalties.
