Celtic have been handed some mixed news when it comes to one of their rumoured targets for the club's next manager.
With very little football left to be played this season, Celtic find themselves in a very difficult situation. It is very possible that they might finish the campaign without a single trophy. But even if they end up with a couple of trophies, they will need to find themselves a new manager.
Martin O'Neill is 74 years old and was retired for all intents and purposes, having not managed since 2019, before Celtic came calling this season.
He is only at Celtic on interim basis until the end of the season though. And even though the Northern Irishman has done well with what he has been given to work with, it is hard to imagine him continuing at the club beyond the ongoing campaign.
Celtic have been linked with quite a few managers as potential replacements for O'Neill. A few of them have even played for the Hoops.
Robbie Keane is one such manager. But he is not the only one. Craig Bellamy had spent time out on loan at Celtic during his playing career as well.
Currently, he is the Wales national team manager. But his time in the role might be limited, which would open up a window of opportunity for Celtic. Unfortuately though, it looks like English clubs are also holding an interest in him.
Namely, Burnley are the ones being suggested as a possible destination for Bellamy, which is bad news if you are a Celtic fan hoping to see him in the Parkhead hot seat.
According to 67 Hail Hail, Alex Crook said while speaking on talkSPORT:
"Yeah, obviously it’s a home EUROs in 2028, which will come into his thinking.
“But I’ve been hearing whispers for a few months now [that] if Wales didn’t qualify for this World Cup then potentially Bellamy would come into the conversation for Burnley, should they decide to make a change of manager.
“He was assistant manager, Vincent Kompany’s number two. They wanted to keep him, actually, when Scott Parker came in.
“So I think it’s certainly one to watch, and I guess his decision is: has he taken Wales as far as he can? Because there aren’t any Gareth Bale-style superstars around the corner, are there?”
Bellamy is currently in the Wales national team job. But before that, he was assistant manager at Burnley. So, that connection already exists and could help the English club sign him ahead of the competition.
As for Celtic, hiring a quality manager needs to be the priority in the summer. They already failed with Wilfried Nancy and cannot afford a repeat of that mistake.
There is still some time to go until the end of the season. So, one would expect a few more names to come up as potential managerial targets for Celtic between now and then.
Let's just hope that the board make the right hire this time around. Otherwise, things will only get worse for Celtic, who are already in a terrible position.
