Sunderland academy starlet signs for Man City
Sunderland have lost highly-rated academy talent Liam Ogunsuyi, younger brother of Black Cats prospect Trey Ogunsuyi, to Premier League rivals Manchester City. Ogunsuyi became Sunderland's youngest-ever under-18s player when he made his debut at just 13-years-old, and therefore it was clear to see why he was named the Academy of Light's Player of the Season for 2024/25. It is an unfortunate loss for Sunderland given his glowing reputation in youth football, but the Black Cats will be financially compensated for the transfer given their efforts in his development. Will this prove to be one Sunderland live to regret? Only the coming seasons will tell.

Sunderland Striker Brian Brobbey Attracts Transfer Interest From Juventus

Juventus linked with Brian Brobbey interest
Seria A giants Juventus have been credited with interest in Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey, according to Italian outlet Gazzetta. The report states: "The Sunderland forward's name is on Continassa's list, with the manager's full approval. "The striker's price tag could be around €40 million, nothing impossible on paper." Brobbey scored an emphatic hat-trick for Sunderland at Manchester City prior to the break, before reportedly catching the eye of Juventus on Netherlands duty versus Germany prior to his hamstring concern. Thankfully, Brobbey has given no indication to being anything other than content at the Stadium of Light, but transfer interest from European elite will inevitaly come if the bullish number nine continues his goalscoring form after the international break.

Florent Ghisolfi explains Sunderland summer transfer call
Sunderland Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi has said that the Black Cats did not sign last season's RB Leipzig loanee Lutsharel Geertruida due to the option of signing Thomas Meunier. Rather than spending £20m on the Dutchman, Sunderland signed Meunier as a free agent following his exit from Lille, and the experienced defender has proven to be a stellar addition to the Black Cats squad. Ghisolfi said: "We had conversations with Lutsha but also we were looking at the market because when you make this type of choice, you have also to see the cost and the impact the player can have with the team. "We were close, but it was also a big cost. Then Thomas was someone who ticks some boxes for us with his leadership and he also knows the rhythm of European competition. "He's tall, and was available on a free, so doing this then means more capacity to do something else. "We thought a lot about this decision but at the end, we think it was the right choice to do." Sunderland fans, do you think it was the right choice?

Dayann Methalie impresses for France U21s
Sunderland full-back Dayann Methalie played the full 90 minutes for France U21s and helped his nation to a clean sheet in their 2-0 win over Estonia U21s amid the international break. Methalie endured a shaky Premier League debut for the Black Cats at Manchester City before the break, but showed clear promise after recovering from his early error to make several key defensive contributions. Over the course of the campaign, and in the seasons ahead, French youth international Methalie will have a major role to play at Sunderland, and hopefully these national outings will bring experience and confidence for the 20-year-old full-back.

Granit Xhaka in Premier League top 10 for key stat
Sunderland star Granit Xhaka sits in the top ten Premier League players so far this season in terms of total distance run. Everton midfielder Harrison Armstrong tops the list with a staggering 60.4km total run, with the Black Cats skipper in eighth place on 56.8 km run, according to the Premier League's data. Considering that Xhaka turned 34-years-of-age in September, it shows the calibre of athlete that the Swiss veteran is, and how imperative he has been to the Black Cats' prospects so far this season. With Xhaka withdrawing from the Switzerland squad due to his vaccine certificate saga, the ongoing international break will offer the midfielder a welcome rest after his goliath graft in the opening stages of the season.

Sunderland given another injury concern amid international break
Sunderland have suffered yet another injury concern during the international break, this time regarding midfielder Noah Sadiki. Sadiki was seen limping after being withdrawn in the second half of DR Congo's 2-1 win over Zimbabwe due to injury. Fortunately, Sadiki's knock is seemingly not as serious as the hamstring issues for both Dan Ballard and Brian Brobbey, who will both miss the rest of the break. The Black Cats heirarchy back on Wearside will be hoping for positive news regarding the trio, who are crucial to Regis Le Bris' side in every department of the pitch.

Wilson Isidor reacts to Haiti win
Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor's Haiti side have enjoyed their second consecutive win of the international break with a 2-0 win over Costa Rica in the CONCACAF Nations League. Isidor played the full 90 minutes, and although he did not manage a goal, he played an important role as the attacking spearhead in Haiti's impressive win. Following the win, Isidor said on social media: "A victory with character! Very proud of this team, the mission continues. Two matches, two successes "Unity is strength !" With Brian Brobbey potentially sidelined for several weeks following his hamstring strain for the Netherlands against Germany, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris will hope Isidor can continue his impressive form during the break into the next stage of the Black Cats' season.

Amid the ongoing international break, it offers a time to reflect on Sunderland's start to the season, looking at those in Regis Le Bris' squad who have both impressed and struggled. In terms of Sunderland's most in-form player in the opening exchanges of the season, it has to be creator-in-chief Enzo Le Fee, who has been exceptional in the heart of midfield for Le Bris. Brian Brobbey did net a hat-trick against Manchester City before the break, with the likes of defensive stalwarts Kevin Danso, Nordi Mukiele and Dan Ballard also impressive before the break. Sunderland fans, let us know below who has been your standout Black Cat across the start of the season so far?

National boss issues Dan Ballard injury update
Sunderland defender Dan Ballard will be sidelined for the remainder of the international break after suffering a hamstring injury in Northern Ireland's 1-0 UEFA Nations League win over Georgia. In added time, Ballard was withdrawn in agony after pulling up and immediately holding his right hamstring, and will now be out for the rest of Northern Ireland's upcoming fixtures against Hungary, Ukraine and the second Georgia clash. Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill said on Ballard: "You saw the nature of how he (Dan Ballard) pulled up, it's a hamstring. "We'll scan him tomorrow, but he's certainly not going to be available for the next three games." Worrying times now ensue for Sunderland and the bruising central defender as the diagnosis awaits regarding how long Ballard will be sidelined for after the Black Cats return to action on October 10.

Sunderland suffer Dan Ballard injury fear
Another day, another injury worry for Sunderland to contend with amid the international break. On Thursday evening, Brian Brobbey was forced off for the Netherlands against Germany with a suspected hamstring issue. This evening (Friday, September 25), Ballard was taken off for Northern Ireland against Georgia with the same suspected injury. Ballard appeared in agony after the incident after stretching for a loose ball under pressure from Georges Mikautadze, and now the Black Cats play a nervous waiting game for the diagnosis of both Brobbey and the brusing central defender's respective injuries.
