Following the success of Armando Gonzalez, Olympiacos are targeting Mexico again, eyeing a bargain move for Chivas' Diego Campillo as his contract talks stall.
After sealing the deal for Armando 'La Hormiga' Gonzalez during the summer transfer window, Olympiacos have decided to raid Chivas de Guadalajara for their starting defender.
According to an update by TransferFeed, Olympiacos are interested in securing the signature of Chivas' central defender Diego Campillo. The Red and Whites are impressed with Gonzalez's performances at the club across all competitions, as he made his UEFA Europa League debut by netting a goal against Jagiellonia Bialystok. Former head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar allowed him to get minutes when first-choice striker Ayoub El Kaabi was fit. However, after the Moroccan's long-term injury, new manager Imanol Alguacil has provided La Hormiga with a prominent role in attack.
Gonzalez's arrival and subsequent exploits have lured Olympiacos to make further inroads into the Mexican football market, and the interest in Campillo stems from this scenario. The 24-year-old is a regular starter for Chivas, but his current contract expires in three months, on 31 December 2026.
The Mexican outfit is yet to hold talks with the player's entourage over a potential contract extension, and this recent news regarding Olympiacos' interest is sure to make him consider a move to Europe.
Campillo went through the youth ranks of Chivas from 2018 to 2021, winning the U20 Guard1anes Tournament in 2020. He made his senior team with Tapatío in 2020 in a 1-0 loss against Tepatitlán. He was then loaned out to Zacatecas in 2022. Campillo returned to Tapatio and helped the club lift the Liga MX Clausura 2023 and the Campeón de Campeones title.
After a stint with Bravos de Juarez, the Durango-born defender signed for his childhood club, Guadalajara, on a permanent deal. He also made his Mexican national team debut under manager Javier Aguirre in February 2026 in a friendly match against Iceland.
After landing Gonzalez, Olympiacos wanted to bring Mexican captain Edson Alvarez to the club from West Ham United as they wanted a midfield reinforcement. While talks between the two clubs occurred and the player was also informed of the negotiations, nothing materialised in the end. However, such an interest further confirmed the Greek giants' wish to invest in talent from Mexico.
Olympiacos' pursuit of Campillo will be one to watch during the January transfer window, as he will be free to negotiate with any club of his choosing. Campillo will be aware that a move to a club under the Marinakis Football Group could well lead to a future appearance in the Premier League through Nottingham Forest.
