Olympiacos open talks for Chivas forward Armando González. Mexican striker has a $15M release clause after his World Cup call-up.
According to reports from transfer window journalist César Luis Merlo, Olympiacos F.C. have opened negotiations to sign Mexican forward Armando González from Chivas de Guadalajara.
The report indicates that the Red and Whites sent their first formal proposal on Saturday to permanently acquire González, 23, from Chivas.
According to Merlo, the Piraeus club has been monitoring the player for some time, and the sporting department has decided to proceed with his signing.
In any case, he points out that, as is common in these initial contacts, Olympiacos’ idea is to learn Chivas’ position and then gradually move closer to the Mexican club’s financial demands. González has a $15 million release clause, according to the same report.
Merlo adds that Chivas could be willing to accept an amount below his release clause, while retaining a percentage of any future sale, if González were to leave Olympiacos.
González played in 17 matches during the 2026 Liga MX Clausura tournament, scoring 12 goals and providing one assist. He appeared in 18 matches in the following tournament, again scoring 12 goals and providing one assist.
In the current Apertura 2026 tournament, he has played in three matches but has yet to score.
His performances in the previous two tournaments earned him a call-up from then-Mexico national team coach Javier Aguirre to the 2026 World Cup, held in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Despite that, he only saw minutes in one match and was not a key part of the Mexican team during the tournament.
González has previously been linked with European soccer, specifically rumoured as a potential reinforcement for CSKA Moscow in the Russian league a few months ago. However, at the time, it emerged that the player preferred to move to another European league.
It is worth remembering that the Russian league is banned from UEFA competitions, and that is unlikely to change in the short term.
Currently at Olympiacos, the main option at centre forward is Ayoub El Kaabi. Beyond him, the position is uncertain, as both Mehdi Taremi and Clayton or Roman Yaremchuk are rumoured to leave the Greek club this summer, so it is unclear what the future holds for the role.
There have also been reports indicating that Mendilibar would like to see Jota Silva play as striker, although it is also a little difficult to get ahead of that, as the Portuguese player was injured during a match against NEC in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds, before they were eliminated and sent to the league phase of the upcoming UEFA Europa League.
