Charles Barkley weighed in on the ongoing WNBA CBA negotiations during an October 9 appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, and he had a clear message for the players: don't overplay your hand. "They walking on thin ice right now," Barkley said. "There's this notion that just because you got power, and talent, these billionaire owners just gonna give you everything you want. That's not gonna happen." He drew from his own experience, noting that NBA players went on strike three times during his career and that billionaires always have the upper hand on millionaires in these situations.
Barkley also addressed the star vs. role player divide, arguing that the superstars drive the league but the majority of players are on the bottom rung — and that treating everyone as equals in salary negotiations is a mistake. He did float one interesting alternative, suggesting that if the players went on strike and took their talents to Unrivaled, they could potentially build their own league with equity and earn three times what they're making now.
Do you think Barkley's advice is sound, or are the players right to push as hard as possible while their leverage is at an all-time high?
