Some are starting to believe that Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers could be heading for a divorce sometime in the near future.
Tomlin has obviously done a great job during his time with the Steelers, helping the team reach the playoffs and keeping them at or above .500 like it’s nothing.
Unfortunately, however, over the past decade or so, the Steelers haven’t been a great team when it matters most, typically losing in the first or second round of the playoffs.
According to Josina Anderson, there’s currently a longtime NFL head coach who is considering a change of scenery, and some believe that coach could be Tomlin.
“Keeping tabs as we approach carousel season: League sources are eyeing five more NFL teams with projected openings at head coach, as of where things stand today, while waiting to collect more data on a sixth team too.
"Meanwhile, there is a longtime NFL head coach out there who is considering wanting a change of scenery & has told others of these thoughts," she wrote. "If he acts on those lingering feelings, his departure would clearly add to the list of vacancies."
When examining the other coaches who could be considered longtime head coaches with their respective organizations, Jacob Punturi stated that, outside of Andy Reid and John Harbaugh, who don’t look like they’d want to leave either organization, Tomlin might be the name she was talking about.
“There are just three coaches who have been at their jobs for 10 or more years. Tomlin, Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs. Besides them, the next longest-tenured trio have been with their respective franchises for eight seasons...
“It's hard to tab Hardbaugh or Reid as the coach Anderson is referring to. The Ravens are red-hot as they have now overtaken the lead in the AFC North. The Chiefs haven't been as dominant this season, but they remain a perennial Super Bowl contender with Reid as their head coach and Pat Mahomes as their quarterback,” he wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of the year unfolds.
If the Steelers continue to struggle and don’t even make the postseason, I can surprisingly say something could happen.
However, if the team were to make the playoffs and win a game in the postseason, this likely wouldn’t happen.
