Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is in the final years of his career, and many thought this could be his final season. However, the 42-year-old has played well this season, and he may not call it a career.
“I’m 42 years old and I’m on a one-year deal, so you know what the situation is. Whenever the season ends, I’ll be a free agent. That will give me a lot of options if I still want to play… maybe one or two," Rodgers said.
This is major news and will impact how the Steelers attack the quarterback position in the offseason.
A lot will also ride on how Pittsburgh finishes the season. They have a win-or-go-home game against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 18.
If the Steelers win that game, they will win the AFC North and head into the postseason. Getting into the playoffs and potentially winning a game or two could entice Rodgers not to retire and re-sign with Pittsburgh.
However, another possibility is that Rodgers continues to play, but does so on another team. The four-time MVP has completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,028 yards, 23 touchdowns, and seven interceptions this season. He has also rushed for 41 yards and a touchdown.
He could be an intriguing quarterback on the market for a team that is looking to jump into playoff contention. However, Rodgers has been the Steelers' best quarterback in recent years, and if he plans to play again, they should do everything in their power to bring him back.
He has led Pittsburgh to a 9-7 record, and they have the opportunity to win the division for the first time since 2020.
If they do bring Rodgers back, the biggest priority must be to add another wide receiver. The Steelers acquired DK Metcalf, who has been their best weapon, but they lack another true threat on the outside.
Pittsburgh's focus will remain on Baltimore ahead of their Week 18 clash for the division title and a playoff spot, but in the offseason, they will see whether Rodgers plays another season and if it will be in a Steeler uniform.
